What does that have to do with anything? What’s with the Gooch love. Total hack who got lucky late career but was a mid 30s player for a long time. And a racist to boot. Shouldn’t have come anywhere near the English captaincy.
Lots of people can’t seperate people’s skill in one area from other things in their lives. e.g Karl MaloneWhat does that have to do with anything?
****ed his daughter iircWhat role has Karl Malone played in Graham Gooch's life?
Guess that would bring him few more points down as a batter.****ed his daughter iirc
Simple. If you went on a rebel tour of South Africa in the 1980s, you should never have been let back into cricket and you should have had your record post that erasedWhat does that have to do with anything?
I didn’t know Gooch did that. Changing my vote to Gilchrist.****ed his daughter iirc
that was Karl Malone. Gooch toured apartheid South Africa.I didn’t know Gooch did that. Changing my vote to Gilchrist.
South Africa was banned from international sporting ties. It was repugnant. People viewed it as such then. The West Indies players who went were ostaracized.Don't be politically pedantic now. When people compare present day morals with the past, they often forgets how the morality changes over time. What's considered normal back then may raise eyebrows now, as will what's considered normal now will in the future. Ofcourse there are still things which were simply evil and should be criticized even considering the era (slavery, sati, human sacrifice, etc), but touring SA to play cricket, I hardly believe qualifies as something outright repugnant. Sure, not a great thing to do but not repugnant. If India plays a Test match with Afghanistan now, does it makes Ashwin mysogynists? If India plays a football match with Israel, does Indians supports genocide?
I think WI players being ostracized was more personal, due to their race. Also, back then it was a topic of hot debate, with plenty people believing SA to return to Test cricket at any time.South Africa was banned from international sporting ties. It was repugnant. it’s a fair point. As players though having seen prime Gooch and Gilchrist’s entire career, I don’t think there’s a lot to debate here.I think WI players being ostracized was more personal, due to their race. Edit: To clarify, I am not saying whether Apartheid was justified was debated back then. It was universally repugnant. The debate was mixing sports with politics.
