that would be Dennis AmissThe best odi opener of the 70's
Plus he chose club over country, which isn't a great start. It's interesting - he probably doesn't get the praise his talent and run-making output deserves in New Zealand. He's potentially more rated in England, or at least for those who followed the game when he was on the county scene. In fact, the OPs comment that he 'anonymously' makes the all-time NZ team is probably the best way for him to make it - with his stats shown and not his identity Presuming the word was meant to be unanimous, I don't actually think that's the case.
I think in this country, it has to do with how he holds himself as a person. It would be fair to say that post-career, he never did a lot to endear himself to people in the game and in public through his media work.
The cricketing world has come full circle then, right? I don't know the $ situation when Turner dedicated himself to Worcestershire, but I do know it would have been comfortably more than he would have made for NZ. I wasn't alive when it happened so I don't remember if it was a contentious issue.Plus he chose club over country, which isn't a great start.
Our 3rd best bat at worst. Probably second or first if Kane continues to ruin his overseas record post 2018
How much of that is based on one minnow bashing inningsThe best odi opener of the 70's
Looking at stats closely you may be quite right as most his big runs are vs East Africa, pre test status SL and India who looked disinterested in odis in 70'sthat would be Dennis Amiss
He had a fundamental disagreement on philosophy with the NZCC chairman (Walter Hadlee) about professionalism. Walter wanted the NZ team to remain amateur, so the NZ team on tour received only expenses level money, rather than a wage etc - while on tour. He eventually refused. The cricketing world has come full circle then, right? I think it's more the negativity he brought to the table as national coach and selector.
Certainly with Latham being exposed against major nations, it's a bit of a no-brainer that Turner opens in our all-time XI.
would make sense given staunchly amateur rugby union was the Big Sport at the time (in New Zealand) and so people would probably follow practices from thatHe had a fundamental disagreement on philosophy with the NZCC chairman (Walter Hadlee) about professionalism. IIRC Amiss was the highest overall run-scorer in ODIs when he played his last ODI. Super underrated player from the early ODI era.Looking at stats closely you may be quite right as most his big runs are vs East Africa, pre test status SL and India who looked disinterested in odis in 70's
Amiss has a balanced record but just played 18 games
Which is exactly why it's silly to crown a 70s batter based on it.IIRC Amiss was the highest overall run-scorer in ODIs when he played his last ODI. Super underrated player from the early ODI era.
18 games is quite healthy for a 70’s batsman too, there simply wasn’t that many ODIs played then.
not disagreeing there at all. Just wanted to pitch in Amiss’ name as he rarely ever props up in these discussions for some reasonWhich is exactly why it's silly to crown a 70s batter based on it.
If you really wanted to care about crowning a limited overs batter of the 70s then you'd probably have to count World Series Cricket and the Sunday League stuff, in which case the head of Barry Richards rears itself again
I assume he would be as good as the current best opening batsmen like an Elgar without being clearly better than them? The current timeline is cursed for openersAnyway, Turner. Probably quite good. In the current era without openers he would probably be in a World XI?
Is the 70s that bereft of openers? Turner averaged less than 30 v the Windies, Australia and Pakistan, barely over v England and dined out on East Africa, India and Sri Lanka.Speaking of 70' I wonder how would a 70's world odi Xi look.

OK then Majid Khan averages 38 in 23 games knowing him it must have come in swift time.Is the 70s that bereft of openers? Turner averaged less than 30 v the Windies, Australia and Pakistan, barely over v England and dined out on East Africa, India and Sri Lanka.
