Headley was mostly an off side player, so Grimmett figured out how to bowl to him. He started to target Headley's leg stump; and Headley hardly scored any run in the first two tests. So, Headley practiced the on drive and scored a hundred in the 3rd test.

After the end of the series, Grimmett himself said that Headley was the best onside player he had ever seen.

coming to think the Ws are about Compton/May/Williamson level while Headley is about Hammond level in ability
Williamson>Weekes>Compton>Walcott>May/Worrell imo.

All are pretty close and switching any two of them shouldn't hurt.

you underrate May tbh
I don't think I'm the only one.

Actually you know what, I rate May significantly higher than general CW consensus. iirc May was ranked at 42 in the 2024 Batsman's poll. I'm pretty sure I'd rate him at least in the top 35.

Headley probably takes this one. Chappell was better against pace, Headley was better allround. He adapted to Grimmett and Ironmonger pretty quick after failures in first few matches. That probably shows his talent. Grimmett and Ironmonger would have levels and levels above anything he would have ever faced in Caribbean.

It would have been interesting to have read about him and O’Reilly battle out.
That's the thing, he was begining to adapt to the bowlers he was facing and improving as the tour progressed. At the time of the war he was truly entering his peak and getting into his stride.

Insane honestly.

people make a fuss about the type of pitches SA served for India this year and in 2017 or the ones India served for South Africa in 2015...and that was pretty much May's average pitch lol
