that is two guys who I've always seen as equal on ability but Hammond just has a much longer career so

a bit lesser than Headley and Hammond on ability imo but Headley's lack of matches hurt him

Headley probably takes this one. Chappell was better against pace, Headley was better allround. He adapted to Grimmett and Ironmonger pretty quick after failures in first few matches. That probably shows his talent. Grimmett and Ironmonger would have levels and levels above anything he would have ever faced in Caribbean.
It would have been interesting to have read about him and O’Reilly battle out.

Pretty much natural talent for Headley tbh. Basically came out from nowhere to be an ATG. Especially considering the batting around him. Him and Hammond are pretty close I think. I have Headley around 9th-10th I think. Hammond bit higher.
Just look up Chappell’s performance against pace, WSC and all. Absolutely outstanding performances. Probably one of the best players ever against pace.
