I think Hutton was a magnificent batsman and is definely in my BAB tier, even there along with Smith and Lara for me.This is a fantastical retelling of the story, West Indies fundamentally had batting paradises until a certain Michael Holding and therefore Styling and dashing play was more possible, England and South Africa are the two toughest places to bat in and thus naturally produce the most rigid players, you cannot equalise the skillset needeed to succeed in England to the skillset needed for West Indies. Saying Sobers won more games without being able to cite a larger number of wins is also sensationalism.
Put Sobers in Hutton's place and he either reworks his style or he won't have a great career, same thing the other way around
But to pretend that Sobers had all barring paradises and Hutton slogged away his entire career in the 50's just isn't true.
In the 30's and 40's it was all flat pitches everywhere, and Hutton too benefitted greatly from playing in the Caribbean, averaging 77 there.
I think they're both great, I just prefer batsmen who can add some impetus to the innings, Sobers was more capable and sis it more often.
None of that is a surprise.
