The true test of a batsman is how well they play fast bowling

Who is more likely to do well against an attack of Marshall, Garner, Holding, and Walsh on a pitch with pace, bounce, and movement? Tendulkar or Hobbs?

Rod Laver was the greatest tennis player in 1960s but most likely a 5 feet 7 inch player would not win even a single set against a Top 20 player today.

Ok, so Joe Root is better than Viv Richards is what you're saying?

Tendulkar played against McGrath, Akram, Waqar, Walsh, Ambrose, Donald, Pollock, Steyn. I am not really sure about Hobbs.

Test cricket did not change much in last 50 years.

Tennis changed dramatically in the 1980s with the introduction of graphite racquets. A legend like Chris Evert wouldn’t even win a single set against Serena.

Johan

International Vice-Captain
No because the testing between what Viv faced and what Root has comparable tradeoffs of advantages and disadvantages with similar baseline level of intensity.
replace Viv with Hobbs and Root with Tendulkar and you're right homie.

Exactly!

so what's to say it changed massively prior to that 50 year cut off.

Replace uncovered pitches with modern games and Sachin with Hobbs, there you go.
Yeah but realistically backtracking Tendulkar to the 20s is easier given what we know of his technique and adaptability than transporting Hobbs today who seems to have skillset a much more distinct product of his time.

I have more confidence in a modern technique to make adjustments. The only exception may be without helmets where I see certain modern cricketers (not Tendulkar) being particularly vulnerable.

you can say the same with Viv as he seems to have the technique and skillset of 70s and thus is inferior to Nitish Kumar Reddy today, same thing.

Sachin wasn't some God vs fast bowling who just took on everybody you mentioned.
Look at his stats against Anderson, Pollock, Donald and McGrath.

1. More than 2-3 countries are playing the game
2. More people have access to becoming cricketers
3. Cricket is a full time profession for players

Johan

International Vice-Captain
Tendulkar struggled with every single great pacer he met bar Ambrose and Steyn yeah

Except we saw the quality of bowlers that Viv played and succeeded against. Who watching Reddy today thinks he can repeat that?
