Four-ball overs

Michael Atherton criticised BCCI for gagging the commentators on sensitive issues during the recently-concluded India/England series. He said that BCCI was using Nimbus, who got the telecast rights, as its mouthpiece by disallowing comments on selection issues or the Chappell/Ganguly spat.

That can't be as bad as the coverage goof-ups that Nimbus committed. Camerawork was a bit weird (can't match TWI) and they got the right captions, but noticed how many times an ad was sneaked in at the wrong time? We find a wicket fallen, and rather than show us the clips of the after-effect or the replay, we see an ad. Over finishes, the commentator has something to say, and he's cut off by an ad. A slightly wide ball is bowled, and before the umpire can call it a wide (if it is), an ad comes in. We have often seen four-ball overs!

Viewers in India have had to suffer this repeatedly on Doordarshan, who got the telecast rights again. That Sahara One (a sloppy, un-appealing entertainment channel) also showed it didn't help matters much, as they tried to sneak in as many ads and previews (of their own shows) in each match. Serious cricket fans watch the analysis with a lot of attention. We could have got a good one with the crew present, but instead, we have to suffer Doordarshan's in-house attempt called Fourth Umpire. Worse, Doordarshan doesn't show highlights very often and Sahara, well, they have better things to do than show cricket reruns. If you've been watching it from outside India, how were your experiences? I'm sure viewers in India would have quite a mouthful about this.

When Sky Sports had occasional satellite problems in Nagpur, and we switched to the Indian coverage, ads'n'all, it was pretty terrible.

I've only very recently realised the extent to which ads get intrusive in India, thanks to a RGDW rant and Simon Barnes article.
I truly am staggered.
Who'd want to watch cricket when you can watch 300 ads a day?

What the heck SAHARA doing with cricket? They dont have any experience in any sports for that matter let alone cricket. Too much of commercialization has resulted into grocery store like run businesses to meddle with cricket. These channels are just traders of telecast rights. The quality of india england telecast was awful. Some experience criteria must be laid down b4 awarding telecast rights.
ESPN STAR was doing a fantastic job with its own team of commentators and expert team. They had a wonderful analysis. I don't understand why they backed off from the telecast tenders. if woeful SAHARA and DOORdarshan  can make money then anyone can

How? They get really really annoying and they don't even tell you what the hell the sportsman is, we're just meant to guess.

The not being able to speak properly is all part of the thing...

Err, what? They clearly show a newspaper with "The Sportsman" on, in just about every one.
Then in the small-print they show "in depth coverage of racing and [something]".

An official from Nimbus said that they had no control over the footage when it passed on to DD and S-1, but they didn't try to sneak in all those ads. They are trying to find out who or what caused these bloopers, technical or human error.

DD has been doing this even before Nimbus got the rights. Sahara are only trying to gain as much airtime for their sponsrs as well as commercials for their own shows– something to get attention, even as they are still struggling for viewership. Can't blame Nimbus all the time.

If ads really are simply "sneaked in" without anyone being held accountable for it then that explains a lot.
