Michael Atherton criticised BCCI for gagging the commentators on sensitive issues during the recently-concluded India/England series. He said that BCCI was using Nimbus, who got the telecast rights, as its mouthpiece by disallowing comments on selection issues or the Chappell/Ganguly spat.
That can't be as bad as the coverage goof-ups that Nimbus committed. Camerawork was a bit weird (can't match TWI) and they got the right captions, but noticed how many times an ad was sneaked in at the wrong time? We find a wicket fallen, and rather than show us the clips of the after-effect or the replay, we see an ad. Over finishes, the commentator has something to say, and he's cut off by an ad. A slightly wide ball is bowled, and before the umpire can call it a wide (if it is), an ad comes in. We have often seen four-ball overs!
Viewers in India have had to suffer this repeatedly on Doordarshan, who got the telecast rights again. That Sahara One (a sloppy, un-appealing entertainment channel) also showed it didn't help matters much, as they tried to sneak in as many ads and previews (of their own shows) in each match. Serious cricket fans watch the analysis with a lot of attention. We could have got a good one with the crew present, but instead, we have to suffer Doordarshan's in-house attempt called Fourth Umpire. Worse, Doordarshan doesn't show highlights very often and Sahara, well, they have better things to do than show cricket reruns. If you've been watching it from outside India, how were your experiences? I'm sure viewers in India would have quite a mouthful about this.
