The deleting of posts round here lately is getting pretty pathetic. When you couple it with the fact that it seems like certain people's VM walls are being monitored, you've got a pretty ****ing big brotheresque forum. What's that about?

Closing the "girl trouble" thread is a bit over the top surely? Just delete the **** posts (1 of which, for some reason, hasn't been touched) and warn the guilty parties.

Shri deleted his own posts.

I am somewhat confused by the fact that we have two consecutive posts in this thread saying "delete more" and "don't delete".

Judging by the post Corrin made in the thread, I don't think it's contradictory.

edit: while I don't have any idea what deleted posts Corrin's referring to, are you seriously going to play dumb and fail to make the distinction between deleting posts which might be insulting (it's my best guess as that's why most of my deleted posts get binned) and deleting posts which make light of paedophilia? I thought you were smarter than that.

As much as I appreciate my intelligence being questioned, the deletions GIMH mentioned were because they immediately disregarded the mod instruction and derailed the thread.

I haven't deleted these posts because, unpalatable as it is, it was the general descent of the thread into that territory. It's shut whilst we decide what to do as we don't want anything to build on it, and will be reopened after we decide on the action. Maybe that isn't the perfect way to deal with it, but it's what's been done.

Tbf Neil, I never saw those posts that fos deleted earlier and was more commenting on the general habit lately of posts being deleted left, right and centre. It seems at odds with the general principle of what gets deleted here over the years. And I've read James saying that he doesn't like stuff to be deleted unless its totally crass.

As far as Girl Trouble goes, while closure is far from ideal (or in many ways fair) I must confess I was just relieved to see something being done. I've seen (and reported) similar things lately and there has been no visible action. It's not like I want to see people punished, just for the mods to acknowledge that ***ual jokes about little girls are never okay.

And ftr I think there is a definitive line between the likes of cpr ribbing Cribb and some of the other **** I've read.

I think what you have said here regarding deletion is eminently fair and I agree with you to the extent that deleting posts is not the way we have typically gone about our business: not least because it then makes it difficult for other members to see why action has been taken.

That, though, is very different to accusing the moderation of being like "Big Brother". VM walls are all publicly viewable: they are still very much part of the forum and the forum rules still apply. There are myriad different ways to talk offsite beyond the bounds of the rules.

I have re-opened Girl Trouble.

Neil, I agree with your points. However, round the clock monitoring of posters' walls and/or checking every post a poster makes proactively is what I would consider to be big brother moderation.

GIMH, did you ever get replies to your unanswered questions earlier in the thread, or were they put in the "too hard" basket by the moderators?

Just wondering. I thought you made some fair points which warranted a reply. But here we are, still bereft of the responses...

Ah yeah, I agree. But I've just given up expecting responses on the most part now tbh.
