This is a great list but somehow I find it hard to believe that the two most modern guys are also the ones with the lowest strike rate.

Whatever it takes!!!
I guess he batted faster maybe earlier in his career then? Anyways, adjusted SR is a bit complicated and maybe even unnecessary for a test match peak list IMO.

Nah definitely necessary. They had 120 overs a day at times in the olden days. Bradman alone faced 70 overs when he scored 300 in a day. He was scoring much faster than anyone else except McCabe despite an SR in the high 50s/low 60s over his career. Defensive batsmen like Hutton, Sutcliffe (and an older Hammond) had strike rates in the 30s. Stroke-makers like May and Dexter in the 40s so a guy like Sobers or Walcott stood out more than Pietersen.

Now whether the strike rates themselves are reliable or not given they're mere estimates is an issue though.

My favourite part of this is that Bradman’s 5 year peak includes bodyline. Also imagine how Hobbs’ career would look without WW1.

Unfortunately, the five year peak rating doesn't work for Pat Cummins, who play one test in 2011 and then didn't play again until 2017. So they only time we has played two test matches during a period of five years was from 2011 to 2017.

It may be better to just stick to calendar years, but then again you have players who didn't string together five consecutive calandar years at any point in their careers.

I wanted a change from 40 innings or 50 innings because a player from this century may complete 40 innings in 2 years but a player from 70 years ago may have taken 8 years to do the same thing.
How about doing something like 6-year peaks for batsmen and spinners and 4-year peaks for seam bowlers thereby recognizing different disciplines of the game require different levels of physical stamina?

It wasn't until recently when someone mentioned Shoaib's peak period - I wouldn't have had him down to be a top tenner in this list even with that though. That's interesting.

Imran's peak is well documented - incredible strike rate too.

Surprising that Steyn's peak didn't come some time between 2007-11 rather than 2013-17. Thought he missed a lot of matches between 2015-17.

Steyn didn’t play any matches in 2017 so I revised the criteria so a player’s peak must include at least five calandar years from first match to last match. Therefore Steyn’s peak is from 2007-2011 and Walcott’s from 1954-1958.

How are you adjusting the averages? Does it take into account quality of opposition it just era? And if just era, how is the era calculated.

Viv, for example, never faced his own attack which was by far the strongest. Is that factored in? Faulkner and Hill both feel over adjusted.

Can we get the list for the unadjusted peaks?

Are they though? That could just as well mean we're underrating them rather than any problem with the algorithm.

Was looking at Charles Davis’ site today and saw something very odd in his historically adjusted SR’s.. Trumper and Hill despite having an almost complete career overlap had very different adjustments, Trumper’s SR adjusting from 68-69 down to 66-67 and Hill’s adjusting from 66.9 all the way down to 58-59..

I might be wrong but I think he used time batted to derive this stat, so career overlap doesn't necessarily mean the same adjustment.
