Not to do it every week. It could be something taken in turns, perhaps. Or a good way for the 2nd XI managers to get involved in.

Blunt Edge to Province's Sword

Western Province will be feeling aggrieved after walking away from the WACA ground with just a draw. The match itself followed a very interesting path as both sides had their moments of glory and the momentum changed numerous times.

WP began things brilliantly as new recruit Tony Ballard found the inside edge of of Ronchi's bat and Puttick took a stunning catch low down to his right to get rid of Ronchi in the first over. This was followed a few overs later by a stunning run out of Ronchi's opening partner Kanitkar. With the WACA pitch providing great bounce early WP could've run through the WA line up then and there and really set the game up for a win. Solid batting however from Pearson and Thornley however saw WA escape out've trouble with the side eventually making it to lunch. However WP then made quick work of their middle order and once again at 5-147 were looking like dismissing WA cheaply. However some dogged lower order batting highlighted by a 10th wicket partnership of 70 with number 11 Milligan making 41 off 48 made a mockery of the WP bowling attack. One interesting thing to note on the first innings however was captain Watson's holding of trump card O Clarke up his sleeve without letting him bowl an over despite Watson bowling 17 himself.

In response regular wickets fell and WP weren't able to establish any really good partnerships. Good tight bowling from Dean and Jenkins frustrated the WP batting line up and led to rash shots. Despite building a solid opening platform Funston's wicket, which was followed up quickly by Watson and Puttick meant the Hammett had no support in which to help build the innings. Province were eventually all out for 324 just 35 runs in arrear.

WA went on the attack early looking to establish a lead quickly so a declaration could be made. However their plan seemingly backfired as Province took early wickets as Ballard once again bowled well. What looked like turning ouit to be an easy chase for WP turned into more headaches as once again they were unable to finish the job. Inspired batting from Ryder and ex WP player Beasley allowed WA to declare setting up 325 from 78 overs. Once again even as the pitch began to show some spin Watson's draw card Clarke didn't bowl a ball.

Jenkins kicked the second innings off just how he finished the first with some wonderful bowling on an all but minefield pitch. A winning result was put out of Province's reach due to early wickets however the side did well to hold on to a draw, once again helped by some good batting from Hammett.

Markus was hugely ****ed off that Watson didn't bowl Clarke.
That's all I have to say.

Shouldn't Province be feeling happy that they were lucky enough to get away with a draw? ;)

NSW bolwers dominate

The nsw bowlers dominated a bowler friendly pitch to take full points of kent and start the season of with a solid 10 Wicket win. Rolling kent for 162 in the first innings really set up the victory, although most of the NSW batsmen didnt bat too well. Palmer 137(326) & Adnan 81(194) where the only 2 who got going, but a total of 312 was acceptable and a good enough lead for the nsw boys.kent come out and tried to get back into the game however the nsw bowlers wouldnt allow them with some fine bowling and good catching seen the kent boys go down in the 2nd innings for 168. Llewellyn 61(147) & G Gow 52(196) where the pick of the bats. but nsw only needing just 18 runs to win the nsw boys got the runs with all 10 wickets in hand and got the season of to a very good start.O Fry 18(21) & V Sehwag 4(8) where the not out batsmen.

Manager Rob malone was very happy with his players, although he wanted more application from his batsmen.

SA 2nds vs Surrey 2nds

Both teams took to the field at Adelaide on a beautiful summer’s day with the air bristling with expectation. A small crowd had gathered to watch the young and exiting players both sides had on offer and they were fuelled by a regrettable alcohol promotion (by 1 get 4 free).

Prior to the match South Australian coach, KJ Goughy, was interviewed. He said "We expect to win this game. No disrespect to Surrey who are a good team, but I have the utmost faith in the talent and ability of the players selected".

The prediction did not come true and what followed the interview was a game of see-sawing fortunes. What started with South Australia dominating ended with them working hard for a draw.

With 6 rookies making their debuts (4 for Surrey and 2 for SA) it was an intense introduction to the world of professional cricket.

SA started strong by blitzing Surrey early and blowing them out of the water for 151 all out in the first innings. The damage was surprisingly done by the seamers (Collyer and Petley taking 4 each). However, SA were not able to capitalize on this fine bowling performance and were bowled out for 200, being 12-4 at one point, with Bennett being the destroyer with 5-55.

Now typically at Adelaide the pitch begins to turn, but in this game the bat dominated the 2nd innings of both teams and the spinners failed to tweak their teams to victory.

Surrey posted 452-5 declared with rookie Bissex and Dighton scoring hundreds.

SA played out 67 overs for a relatively tame draw, scoring 220 in the process with rookie Doshi being unbeaten on 116.

After the game Goughy insisted that he was pleased and whilst a victory would have been great this type of game gives everyone an opportunity and guys like Doshi, Collyer and Petley took theirs. He also added that he thought it would be difficult to bowl teams out on this Adelaide track if it stays the same throughout the season.

Goughy nominated Bissex as the MOM for Surrey

Dela Cruz lavishes praise on Tamil Nadu 1st XI

Newly appointed Tamil Nadu 2nd XI manager, Robertinho Dela Cruz, has lavished praise on his 1st XI counterparts. "They were clinical," he commented after the game. "Andrew [Cloete] has moulded this squad into a frighteningly professional, highly efficient group of players. He doesn't like big heads or people that horse around, and it shows."

Sourav Ganguly upon hearing of Tamil Nadu's emphatic victory

Dela Cruz was highly impressed with the fighting spirit of the side. "At 7/51, there would've definitely been some worried faces - and after that, to defend 236, they didn't even give Warwickshire a sniff. It's a sign of things to come," he assured the conference. "It would take a huge effort to overcome the firepower in this side, and I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to do it."

In related news, the Tamil Nadu 2nd XI won by forfeit over a disastrously organised Warwickshire 2nd XI.

WP Sets Standard for Season Ahead

After fighting a bout of illness during the week, WP 2nd XI manager Jack McNamara was very proud of his boys at a press conference held the following Tuesday. Holding his intravenous drip nearby, McNamara spoke with clarity (provided by a translator) about how impressed he was with his side's output.

"What pleased me most was that the mix between outstanding individual performances, and team collectiveness. Particularly important was the 8th wicket partnership in our first innings, it made sure that we were able to snuff out any chance that WA had."

While slightly disappointing in the first innings, the debut performance of Chilvers was a highlight for the WP coach. "I don't think you can underestimate the input that Schofield had into our win though. We had a very inexperienced attack, and his 6 wickets set an example that hopefully the rookies can follow throughout their careers with us, and provided the sort of leadership that we expect form our older players in the 2nd XI."

"All in all, couldn't have asked much more from the side. I'll be putting the heat on Jaquesy to lift though, he's a guy who should be putting more pressure on the 1st XI than what he did this game."

Bemusement turned to extacy, which turned to uncertainty, which finally reverted to pain as the gallant Yorkshire Second XI missed out on a win against the slow-starting yet hard-fighting Free State Second XI. The Yorkshire captain, allrounder Greg Belle, heaped praise on both teams for turning a relatively one-sided game into a tense race to the finish. Losing the toss and being asked to bowl, Belle's decision to use the relatively unexperienced Arafat to open the bowling with Saeed caused a bit of suprise but was easily justifyable by the end of the first day.
'I wanted to use Yassir and Zaheer to give us a nice burst of energy at the start of the season. They're our quickest bowlers, and I wanted to give Free State an idea of our intentions. Darren (Gough) is a more than capable first-changer, and I knew I could rely on him to take a few wickets mid-innings as well.'
The strategy paid off in ways Belle could never have expected. Saeed found bounce and pace, and his outswingers toppled five of the first seven batsmen (one was not out, the other was run out). With Gough and Cornwall bowling with metronomic accuracy from the other end, Free State were dismissed for just 93 in their first innings, to which Yorkshire replied with 346. The innings was at a perilous 4/106 when Belle joined Timothy Lyon, who was the first batsman to really look at home against the Free State attack. Belle struck twelve fours in a prominent display of his abilities, however it was Lyon who took the batting plundits with his masterful 117.
'Timothy has played with me since my grade cricket years,' Belle informs me, 'and he has always been a very good batsman to watch, and play with. His performace today was out of this world, and I hope he can emmulate it in later matches.'
This was the end of the fun and games for Yorkshire, however, as Free State mounted an emphatic comeback. Zaheer Saeed laboured for his 6/56, but Free State's opening batsman, Bacher, hit a counter-attacking century to force the game to a meek draw.
Belle laments his brilliant innings, and his own tendancy to overbowl people. 'It was the first game, and I didn't want to overbowl Saeed, so I gave Yassir and William (Cornwall) a few overs as well. The fact that I overbowled myself wouldn't have helped!' Belle's toungue-in-cheek reply made me laugh, and after sharing a few more giggles the Second XI Captain became a bit more serious. 'Being realistic, Bacher was brilliant, and he received great help from McPhee, Javed and Jewell. Our bowlers bowled with real flair and determination, but those Free State batsmen wanted to draw so bad. Well played to them.'

Yorkshire Second XI Manager's Best and Fairest Voting
Round one Vs Free State:

3 - Zaheer Saeed - 11/84
2 - Timothy Lyon - 117
1 - Greg Belle - 78 and 3/66

Manager's Comment:
  • Saeed was able to carry a fairly uneven bowling attack with his best spell of bowling yet;
  • Belle's captaincy was inventive and he showed a good understanding of the need to bowl players into form;
  • The batting was fairly uneven although Lyon and Belle batted with a calmness of that of a much older player.

Leibenberg turns back the clock

Colts 2nd XI captain Gerry Leibenberg turned back the clock as he lead Colts' 2nd XI to victory. The 34 year old wicket keeper batsmen put on a master class on the first day of the four day match against Victoria, with a priceless 130. Leibenburg dug in dead facing 340 balls for his hundred driving Victoria's bowling attack lead by Sri Lankan fast bowler Latish Malinga and former Australia A all rounder Cameron White. Gerry came in after a solid 80 run opening partnership by rookie openers Jayasuriya Squires (35) and Ebrahim Stone (44). Gerry was joined by former South Africa Under 19 Captain Imraan Khan, who produced the innings of his life to score 154 in a 3rd wicket partnership with Leibenburg of 258. After these two left Colts' middle order continued their attack on Victorian bowling attack scoring 526 before Leibenberg declared.

In reply to Colts massive 526, the Victorian never got going, with all four bowlers used by Leibenburg sharing the wickets to roll Victoria for 184. The Vics offered more resistence in the 2nd Innings after following on with rookie Azharuddin (117) and Indian batsmen Mohammad Kaif (86) comming together put on a 174 run stand to the give the Vics a chance of forcing the Colts to bat agian. But once they were back in the stands Bushrangers wicket continued to fall with only Rikki Clarke (52) offering any resistence. But once vetern English bowler Jason Lewry came back on, he ran through the tail to leave him with figures of 5/90 and give Colts an Innings and 20 run win.

MVP Points:
3. Imraan Khan
2. Gerry Leibenberg

Karachi Fall At Final Hurdle.......And Every Other One As Well.

A dismal batting performance in both innnings by the Karachi 2nd XI set up a strong 9 wicket victory for Guyana. After Karachi's captain Ackerman won the toss and chose to bat, Karachi's experienced opening partnership of Manhus and Jenkins took the total to 48before Jenkins fell to rookie Al Zabir. Al Zabir and fellow rookie Pilgram then ripped through the Karachi batting lineup. 9 wickets fell for 51 runs, and were it not for a last wicket stand of 27, between Louw (32*) and Norman (5), Karachi's total would have looked much worse.

Any hope that was held by the Karachi team that a similar collapse would hit Guyana were soon squashed, when the total was past with only one wicket down. While a solid bowling performance was put in by all bowlers, strong batting contributions from Anderson (83), Rudolph (59) and Hemananth Kumar (43) meant that Guyana piled up 341 runs. An imposing total compared to the paltry Karachi total.

The top order centuries that were needed for Karachi to provide any sort of a competetive target for Guyana never eventuated, and at 6/95, a Botham-esque comeback was needed. A 60 run partnership between Monaghan(33) and Louw(29) provided a small glimmer of hope, and a 59 run partnership between Pandit (39) and Cole (29) meant that Guyana had to bat again, but instead of an imposing target, 22 was all that was needed. Hemananth Kumar was the only wicket to fall, and Guyana romped home for a 9 wicket victory, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Karachi's manager Myles Hutchinson commented that despite a "very dissapointing result overall" positives could still come from the game. "Our bowlers bowled well, especially after such a demoralising batting exhibition in the first innings. When our top/middle order performs, i think we can deffinitely compete against the other teams."

Karachi 2nd XI MVP Votes:
3 - J Louw - 32*, 29 and 1/28
2 - M Jenkins - 22 and 33
1 - P Norman - 3/69

WA Manager Hits Back

Western Australia's manager Chris Butler, was absolutley amused upon reading the comments made by the Western Province manager in the morning paper. "i dont know what game he was watching, but apart from a few overs at the start of day one, we dominated the match, and infact the only reason they were able to hold onto a draw was because of our meltdown in the field on the final day. Western Province came to Perth expecting an easy win, against a team, that they beleive, are one of the minows of Div 1. but if theyre getting dominated by one of the weakest teams in the division, it clearly does not boad well for their season does it."

Chris Butler was happy witht he bowling performance of his team as well as the middle to late order. but he was dissapointed with his top for with the exception of thornley. "we will have to score a few more at the top, but overall it was a good start to the season"

ACT Open Season in Style

ACT's 2nd XI kicked off its season in style today as they completed the clubs clean sweep over Northerns in the opening round.

Led by a brilliant 1st innings spell from Ajit Hasan the South Africans struggled to a megre 174 in the 1st Innings with none of the home team able to get into an innings..

The boys from Oz however got off to a shaky start, however in form batsman Quinten Riley once again showed his rising stature as he posted a brilliant 88 to lead the visitors to 205, a lead of 31..

The 2nd Innings had alot more to offer for the hosts as they managed partnerships, which allowed them to set a handy target of 245..
Tamhane impressing the most for the visitors with 3 wickets, but more impressivley the very good economy rate...

Chasing 245 on a deteriorating pitch was never going to be easy but the visitors showed class from the outset.. Losing Conran with the score at 49 was a slight hiccup but after that Trescothick, Williams and Riley finished the game off in style...

After the Match, Manager Brendon Goff heaped praise on the squad, "The whole squad has been super so far, pre season was strong and we have really bonded well.."

When asked about Riley's form Goff was full of praise "Quinten has done everything asked of him and he has been rewarded with a callup to the OD team this week.. If his form continues then im sure he will be close to a First Class callup.."

First Class Round One

Any hopes of starting Season 7 with a win for Yorkshire were quickly dashed by the Free State bowlers.
With 10 of the 11 players making their debut for the home side, enthusiasm was high before the matches start.
Unfortunately, Dawn was dismissed for just 5 and the score 15. With the departure of the captain, things didn't get much better. There was a steady flow of dismissals from loose shots and superb bowling by the Free State attack.
There was some hope, as Martin Love stroked and cut his way to 53 not out. Wicketkeeper-batsman Lou Vincent managed to hang around for 32 but the veteran Love soon found himself without a partner with the final wicket falling for 224.

Martin Love ground out a fine 53*

To get back in the game, the Yorks attack lead by Evans needed to strike early. A good opening spell was not rewarded as Halse and Westwood built a 96-run opening stand.
Halse, Court and the young Bowes all posted solid half centuries, Bowes being unlucky not to get a century out for 87. Laker, Silva and Kaneria all shared in the wickets while Evans was clearly frustrated at not being able to breakthrough.
Yorkshire's second innings was slightly better than the first, even if they ended up 1 run behind their first innings total. 3 batsman made it into the 40's but went no further, with another 3 gettings starts.

Mahela Jayawardene couldn't convert his 41 into three figures.

Martin Love added only 2 runs to his Yorkshire account when he was cleaned bowled by a beautiful Halse yorker.
The lead of just over 100 was never going to be enough, with Free State chasing it down in 36 overs for the loss of 2 wickets.

"I have to admit" said Manager Greg Thomas in the post-match press conference "our batting hasn't quite clicked yet. In the first innings we threw away good starts. In the second, we threw away good partnerships. At the start of the day it was 50/50 between batting and bowling on this pitch, and with the benefit of hindsight it turned out to be the wrong decision to bat first. Michael (Dawn, Yorkshire's captain) didn't know that but I feel he did well with an unknown side. As the season progresses, we'll learn to play better together.
The bowling was strong but a little defensive. I thought Evans bowled superbly and he was unlucky to not get a wicket. He is part of the spearhead of our attack, and I predict in the next encounter he will get a big haul."

"It's dissappointing, obviously, to lose the very first match of the season" sighed Yorkshire's new captain, Michael Dawn "but we can't let this early setback get us down. We have a strong team and we'll bounce back against South Australia in Round 2."

Mr. Thomas also commented on the Yorkshire 2nd XI.
"I'm very pleased with the performance of our 2nd XI. Nick (Hancock) has constructed a good side and I applaud him for giving the rookies a go, especially with Belle as captain. Lyon's century was superb in his first match for the club and Belle showed why he's a star of the future with wickets and a half century, though the best performance came from Saeed! He bowled with great control and it was plain to see he troubled all the batsman. I'll be watching his performance very closely in the next couple of weeks so don't be surprised if he gets the call up to the first team."

Zahid Saeed tore up the Free State Second Eleven with 11 wickets, a Man of the Match effort.

Yorkshire all out 224.

Martin Love 53*, Lou Vincent 32.
Z Ecclestone 4-61, N Ul-Hasan 4-57.

A solid second innings batting performance allowed Tasmania 2nd XI to do what the first team were unable to, and wrap up a victory against Mumbai. This looked unlikely after the teams had played one innings each however. Tasmania had scored just 112, after being absolutely destroyed by Curgenven's 8-48. Frodo Rickman top scored with 32 as no one really got going.

Mumbai fared a lot better, scoring 215. Rookie Hakim scored 85, but had he received good support things could have been better for Mumbai, the next highest score was 24. Hettiarachchi was the pick of the bowlers, with 4-59, while rookie spinner Kitchil also picked up 2 wickets.

Faced with a 103 run deficity, Tasmania needed a much better performance, and that they got. They made 337 as Bhandari took 5-90, but interestingly only Tom Rowell passed 50, but there were 4 other scores over 35.

This left Mumbai needing 235 to win. They started solidly, but wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the innings, and five batsmen made scores in the teens. Helped by Akram's 4-52, Tasmania bowled Mumbai out for 193, 42 runs short of their target.

Captain Russel Arnold spoke to reporters after the match:
"It was a good victory, but nothing to get too excited about. We still have lots of things to improve upon, especially with our batting. Nonetheless, it's a good result, and we have a good chance of doing well in this league."

"Russ is right on the ball there." Said Alex Crampton in the same press conference. "It was a good team performance, although we still have plenty to work on. I felt there weren't any performances that leapt out screaming 'pick me', but hopefully that shouldn't matter. I know two of the rookies didn't do so well, but it's their first game, and there's bound to be some nerves. Kitchil was impressive though, but it's unfortunate for him he's a spinner in a team that already has too many."
