Plus, if you give these teams a chance, they can only improve, Afghanistan have emerged through the bottleneck and have thrived, where would Ireland, who burst on the global scene before Afghanistan and who were given Test status at the same time, be if qualification for global events hadn’t been so cut-throat? Scotland beat the West Indies in the 2023 CWC Qualifier but didn’t even make it through, they gave England and Australia a right fright last year in the Caribbean (actually, Australia probably were mildly amused at the prospect of sending England out), but then they go back to slumming it away on the Associate circuit

The big group stage format is terrible, 9 frigging games to progress to the semis, or simply to suffer defeat after defeat, how many dead rubbers are there? The football World Cup doesn’t see nearly as many, and albeit it’s unique to football really, we see some great drama in the 3rd game of the group (maybe slightly less now that some 3rd place teams will go through). I don’t buy the argument about more teams diluting the competition, the gap between the lower Test teams and the top associates is negligible, you only have to see the Windies’ struggles in the last World Cup qualifier to see that, and I know T20 is more likely to produce upsets, but the USA had never even made a World Cup before and stunned Pakistan. Speaking of Pakistan, they lost to Ireland in 2007 in a 16 team tournament, a more cynical man than I might suggest that (and Bangladesh beating India) is the reason behind that format being shelved…
Not sure if we are agreeing or disagreeing here. Are you saying the ODI World Cup also needs to be played in the same format as the T20 WC?

I'd be down for that but I think broadcasters might object to that because that would mean less games?

Either way, unpopular opinion but I think ODI format will eventually die a slow death. Either that or 50 overs could be reduced to 40 over ODI's.

My point is more teams and more upsets make for a more colourful tournament, and it will happen if teams are given the chance. ODIs are kinda on life support now, only the World Cup and to a much lesser extent the Champions Trophy are keeping the format alive, I’m not sure what the solution is, if any, but while some people may instinctively dislike 40 over ODIs, let’s not forget that they’ve already been reduced from 65 overs, and that there are players in the England team who have played (and benefitted from!) playing 40 over domestic comps, so there’s no reason ODIs must be 50 overs at all

Whatever it takes!!!
I think the 2011 WC format was fine. 14 teams. With 12 full members, we can have 10 teams qualify automatically including the hosts, and then the next 4 can come through a qualifying tournament. Two groups of 7, so each team gets 6 games which is a decent run of games for group stage to make a comeback from the odd upset for the good teams. Then QFs, SFs and finals like all major world tournaments.

14 Team ODI WC
20 Team T20I WC

and hopefully someday

8 Team Test WC - played as a tournament.

For me, it's World Cup>WTC>CT then a lot of these >>>>>> to World T20. I know I'm in the minority, but the sooner T20 ****s off and becomes a purely franchise game, and the World T20 is purely picked on franchise form, the better.

It's a shame there hasn't been more teams in this tournament, and no doubt my enjoyment is coloured by my team being great and through from the Pak/SA tri-series, but it's been fun. The format shits all over T20 as a proving ground for ability and cricket with depth/nuance to it.

If we beat India after their strong arming for 7 star, park the bus out front for 3 weeks and leave the keys in reception luxury in a tournament they aren't hosting, it'll be the perfect event and the world will thank us

T20 will be global. Cricket is fast becoming a 3 country sport.

Yes.

Sport needs depth and authenticity to be meaningful. If cricket doesn't provide it, I'll go somewhere else.

Though options are shrinking 😡

Prize money for Winners of,

- ICC ODI World Cup : $4M
- World T20 : $2.45M
- CT : $2.24M
- WTC : $1.6M

The prize money for World T20 will only get bigger because it's tied to viewership and the number of teams participating in it.

It's pretty obvious it will be the biggest event in cricket in 10 years time.

Should we drop Kuldeep for Sundar in the final?
We made this mistake in WC final when we didn’t drop Siraj for Ashwin.
