Well there's a real chance of getting killed (or your relatives suffering instead, or something mild could happen instead like your house being burnt down...) if you had missed that penalty in Cameroon, so it's not a normal football situation.
Well the guy who took it said to Sam that he had a good feeling. Poor guy.

I'd say Lampard and Adriano are the top two candidates for me. Ronaldinho is out of the running IMO but that doesn't matter.

I think that's a massive over-exaggeration - if that were the case then none of the players would've taken the kick.

Eto'o bottled it, pure and simple.

I think whether or not Ronaldinho deserves to win it or not is pretty much immaterial - footballers always vote for the wrong players in Player of the Year votes, part of the reason why everyone sees them as idiots - Ronaldinho will win because footballers always vote for the flair player over the guy who actually plays better.

i thought Marc was referring to Lyon when he was talking about bottling it and hiding at the crucial time, now i realise it was eto'o

The guy has much better credentials to be in the list from the performances than Ronaldo, Raul, Carlos, Zidane and some other more famed names.

Who will be far more remembered for being the man who bottled it.
So what about Pierre Wome who asked to take it and hit the upright and missed?

The fact that he's been anonymous at international level all year will count against him, though.

Adriano is the closest challenger to Ronaldinho in my opinion - the only footballer other than Ronaldinho who has continually produced the seemingly impossible over the past year.
On the other hand Adriano has been banging in the goals for Adriano this season and not so for Inter. And the game he misses Inter rout Livorno 5-0, so who knows what it would have been had he been playing? Veron wasn't impressed apparently.

He'll no doubt be remembered as the bloke who missed it.

But unless Eto'o does something pretty sensational, his career is only going to be remembered because of 1 thing.

But had he taken it and missed it, he will also be remembered as the guy who bottled it.

He is in a no win situation. Of course had he scored he would have been a national hero.

That does not mean you do not deserve to be nominated. If Warne had a splendid Ashes and dropped a crucial catch which may have been significant, that wouldnt mean he couldnt win cricketer of the year hypothetically.
