I've seen many great matches over the years but one has always stuck in the mind....

It was the 90/91 World Series Cup, Australia vs New Zealand at Hobart. To my youthful mind the world champion Aussies were nigh on unbeatable. Boon, Jones, Border, Waugh, McDermott, Reid, and so on.

New Zealand had a team consisting largely of young greenhorns after the great 80's players had largely retired.

We were supposed to get spanked - we reached 190-something after Bryan Young whacked 41 at the death, and then the Aussies collapsed.

Australia needed 2 to win, off 6 balls, 1 wicket remaining. Bruce Reid was facing Chris Pringle with Greg Matthews (I think) going crazy at the other end as Reid missed every ball. The over was a maiden - Bryan Young ran in and broke the stumps on the last ball as the batsmen were trying to run a bye that would have tied the game.

New Zealand won by 1 run. Ecstasy!!

India v Zimbabwe at Faridabad (2002 I think) cue doug marillier..
This match - note the knock by India's heroic number 9 - 40* off 19 balls!!!

The highlights: 46.5 Khan to Marillier, FOUR, quick one on the pads, Marillier walks
right across his stumps, the fielders can only watch in dismay as
the cheeky batsman swats the ball over the fine leg fielder who is
ihnside the circle!

48.5 Khan to Marillier, (noball) FOUR, full and on the off, slower one,
Marillier waltzes across his stumps and scoops the ball straight
down past the keeper to the fence, amazing shot
48.5 Khan to Marillier, FOUR, and again! this man is amazing! Marillier
smacks the ball back over the keeper once more! what incredib

49.5 Kumble to Marillier, (noball) FOUR, short ball on the off, pull
played, no-ball called, all happening here, the ball races away to
the third man fence right over the keeper! Zimbabwe win!
Marillier!

Go Dougie!!!

Incidentally, Marillier used to play at Kenilworth (3 or 4 miles from me) with one of my mates. 6 months later he made his International debut.

5 Tests - 185 @ 30.83 and 11 wickets @ 29.27 yet he hasn't played one in over 2 years - seems strange with the current problems.

Stuart Matsikenyeri? With 117 runs @ 38.66? I think you're being a bit too hard on him. Keep in mind that ODI's are not Tests and Marc's comment was in relation to Marillier's Test record.

But tell me what Matiskenyeri has done to overtake Marillier in the Test XI?

The best innings I've had the pleasure of seeing to date...
And it wouldn't have happened but for a missed run-out, and even after all the good work but for Healey putting down the simplest of chances the match would still have been lost.
One thing I've never heard was: was the run-out Lara's fault?

Matsikenyeri didn't do too badly in the one-day games, warm-up and the odd ODI, in England. I still don't think he's quite ODI class, but I've also seen worse.

The stupid thing is that both have higher Test averages than Wishart and Carlisle, and while both are reasonable bats, neither I would rate as good as the aforementioned.

All this coming from a guy who was involved in an awful car crash in Harare.. Smashed both his legs and he was told he would never walk again....

Anyone looking for a role model?

I remember meeting my mate in a pub having not seen him for 12 months or so.

I asked if he remembered Dougie, and he said yes, and I told him he was now an International - he was gobsmacked!

In no order:

Headingley '81
WI (chasing 308, Lara 158*) v Aus, 1999.
Worcs v Lanky, 2003 C&G s-f.
Eng v India 2002 one day series final.
Edgebaston '85 (pivotal game in that series).
SA v Aus wc s-f '99.
SL v Aus '96 wc final
India v WI '83 wc final

Worst cricket match:
Worcs v Lanky '95 B&H s-f...(a great game but what a choker for the home support...only revenged last season).

OTHER SPORTS.
Palace 4 Liverpool 3, '90 fa cup s-f.
Barca 4 MU 0, '94.
game 6 of the '86 world series (mets v red sox).
higgins v white, '82 sf.
any Ryder Cup when Europe win.

What a ludicrousy placing this in amongst that lot.
That wasn't a good game at all - it was two mismatched teams.
Gary Walsh made two glaring errors and that was all that made the score as emphatic as it was - and there have been plenty of higher-scoring games anyway.

Maybe, but none were anywhere near as good as 6-1 against Gooners in 2001\02 or a few others.
