That said, it was a breath of fresh air to hear the Cat on TMS in Sri Lanka - Very humorous, and he knows what Test Cricket's about as well!

The problem is that if the "variation" costs you more runs than a seamer, then I would pick the seamer.

Personally I would go for an extra batsman ahead of a 5th seamer if you haven't got a spinner.

And if the extra batsman can bowl a few overs of spin, all the better now Vaughan refuses to use himself.

And Schofield was picked due to showing that he could take wickets with sharp-turning deliveries, a strike bowler who would cost you runs but if he got it right would be unplayable. I hope he gets his confidence back.

I too hope he gets it back, but playing for Lancashire and seeing them give Carl Hooper the ball in preference to you must be quite depressing at times.

And I thought he was picked more on potential as he's a leg spinner than anything else, but I may be mistaken.

I'm not sure how he is in real life, but Michael Davies of Northamptonshire is good as hec in ICC :wow:

So is Jason Brown from the same team...

Brown took Davies' place.
Davies had a good 1999, but then he lost it, as discussed.
Neither of them were\are anything special, that's what must be remembered, but they were\are better than other fingerspinners around. They have the benefit of playing on the best surface for bowling spin in the country.
Neither are as good as Croft and Giles.

I believe Gavin Hamilton got the Yips last year for Yorkshire and just COULDNT bowl the ball properly, although i hear he's got over the problems and is fit for the comming season.

He's never been unfit, he's just never been quite good enough as a batsman to earn a place on that alone.
Gav got the yips in 2002, not 2003, and played only a couple of games in the 2 seasons.
Sadly we didn't give him much of a chance, and we found it neccesary to release him.
He's decided to go closer to home (he is a Scotsman). Durham are a lucky lot if he gets his bowling and batting back to it's best, because he's a brilliant player.

Well I believe you must play your best bowlers (you have to be flexible though) and I can assure you mate it will bring up the "variation" agruement.

You pick your best bowlers, for me, simple as. Always remember that best is tailored to the conditions, but never pick "the spinner".
Only in the subcontinent, and possibly West Indies, are conditions typically suitable for any decent fingerspinner to be better than a decent seamer.
Trouble is England only have 2 or 3 decent fingerspinners (one having retired) and no seamers at present who are certainly decent.

Note where I said "with a bit of work" , namely improving his control , he turns the ball a lot & he's got a good temperament , not scared to toss it up & buy a wicket.


Worst specialist spinner in England , mate there are some very , very poor spinners in England , Schofield is no world beater , but he has potential.

Believe me, Space, david is right. Schofield mightn't be the ritz most of the time, but there are plenty worse. Indeed, there are plenty worse Worldwide. So far there is little evidence that Doherty doesn't fall into that category!
Schofield simply can't string it together very often, but he has, for me, shown his potential quite clearly.

He needs to sort out his action. Its too 'messy' arms everywhere...the beauty about Warne / Murli is that they have good repeating actions that are identicle 99% of the time. Where as Schofield you watch him bowl and i doubt he has the same action more than 3 times an over.

Not the most rhythmical of actions, but no problem with the repetition.

posted by DavidYes I am willing to stick my neck on the line , give it two seasons (provided they both play regularly for their respective states) & I would be willing to bet that not only will both their records improve drastically but at least one of them will be either on the fringes of international cricket or already playing.
Lets wait until March 2005 (provided we are still both on here) and then we will see who was right.

Well, I haven't actually said "I think you're definately wrong" - from what I've heard of White, he's got the makings of a decent bowler in any conditions. Though if your description of him as Kumble-like is true, he possibly could struggle away from the subcontinent.
But if you think Doherty will be a bowler with a good record in two years' time, I'm perfectly willing to say I don't think he will - purely and simply because he is a fingerspinner playing in Australia.

This still stands :P

He was picked on potential and the fact he was taking wickets with unplayable deliveries at an average of under 30, and could bat.
