Glamorgan we're only missing Laubaschagne and Crane from their first choice T20 side.

So definitely feel a bit for them. As they made it a close game in the end in what was a mismatch in terms of first XI T20 experience.

Yes you could call it jealously as opposed to hatred.

Bit how people don't like Man City etc in football terms, even though if it was there club they'd be happy as larry.

They are definitely the county with the most resource available to them. Can just afford to pick up someone like Shakib Al Hasan for one solitary game, whereas some counties can barely afford a decent overseas player.

Aside from that they've got a wealth of private schools that feed directly into them. As cricket is generally a sport more accessible to wealthy people so they've got a easier route to producing first class and England cricketers. Lot of counties are reliant on a smaller pool of players invariably from state school that then train with their own academy.

They are guaranteed a test every summer are more historic and have a hundred team too. They can then cherry-pick the best players from other sides as can afford to pay them more.

There's also been the view playing for Surrey has helped players getting notices for England opportunities both Stoneman/Borthwick jumping ship at Durham for better pay and England prospects.

At least Surrey's success is sustainable. They're not dependent on a sugar daddy like Hampshire, or on raiding the surrounding counties for promising young players like Notts.

Heard cricket is more popular in private schools not so much in public schools

They were only promoted from the second division as recently as 2015.

Their record after being relegated in last place in 2008 ie. from 2009 to 2015 is 16th, 16th, 11th (promoted), 7th, 9th (relegated), 14th, 10th (promoted). That's fairly ordinary just 10-15 years ago. They have won it in 2018 as well as the last three years. They have been decent for three years, were middle of the tables in 2021. (5th in div2 in the 32nd half after being 4th in group 2 initially.

Alec Stewart took over from Chris Adams in 2013 then was promoted upstairs to DoC.

Granted, I have a special hatred for City considering they absolutely humiliated us on our big day, but Surrey don’t seem that bad, have they broken any rules to get where they are? Or are they more like United back in the day?

Unlike City, Surrey don't benefit from international breaks and have to manage 70% of their domestic season without several players.

They were harder hit than any by the covid season where the England players were kept in a bubble, while Surrey finished bottom of their section of the BWT.

They have a good deal of honest, dependable pros too and have needed them.

Can't put my finger on when the upwards trend began really. They've always been a huge club in cricket terms in England but when I started following cricket in the early 80s, they were pretty mediocre to be honest.

Essex, Middlesex, Kent, Somerset etc were the big hitters. Lancs more so in limited overs.

That seems to have helped. But we also had a really good spell in the late 1990/early 2000s. I think we won the CC 3 times out of 4 under Adam Hollioake's captaincy, and suspect that final point was key even allowing for the very strong squad that he AH could call upon. But @The Brian Hardie Stance is absolutely right about how mediocre we were throught the 1980s. Ditto the 1970s actually after winning the CC in 1971, which was the first season when I took any sort of interest.

Stewart seems to have placed more emphasis on Surrey developing their own players and sometimes bringing back players such as Sibley, Evans and Jordan who were previously with Surrey. This surely gives them a more solid base to build on and ride out international calls.

I do not hate any county and one of the things that I like about county cricket is that is largely free from such fierce partisanship. I do though think less of those who poach large numbers of first-team players from other counties, thinking of Warwicks and Notts in recent years.

I think the difference is that those counties just poach the star players from other sides. The current Notts line-up for example features Duckett, Slater, Pennington, Stone and Joe Clarke who were all fully developed elsewhere before moving to Trent Bridge.

When Surrey recruit from other counties but they typically focus on players who have unfulfilled potential. Jamie Overton is a good example. He was a fringe player at Somerset who obviously had pace but lacked the control to be consistently effective. Surrey took him on, changed his run up and turned him into a seriously good bowler (when fit). They also developed his batting to the point where he plays up the order in T20s.

Cameron Steel is another who has flourished at Surrey in a way that surprised me. It was a real wtf moment when they signed him but they knew what they were doing.
