Why has Saqib Mahmood not played since the 100? it's really frustrating that Englands best prospects can't get on the pitch.

He's "Managing his Workload".

Same as Buttler, Livingstone, Wood, Salt. Unlike just about everyone else who play for any other county.

Lancashire's hierarchy need Blast success to mitigate the relegation battle.

7/140 from 50.4 overs!!! from young Farhan Ahmed.

Some effort to bowl that many overs in an innings let alone as a 16 year old.

Let alone doing that against Surrey and taking your maiden FC fifer on his CC debut!!!

Blimey. Lancashire are dreadful aren't they. Have the two Roses counties ever been in the second division together?
To answer ths easy bit, yes in 2005 both were promoted.

To terms of the first statement guessing a few possible reasons in no particular order and in reality it's more than likely a combination

a) new coach
b) recruitment
c) dressing room
d) budget
e) priorities
f) expectations

all of which have much longer explanations.

And to add, they are only where most members supporters expected them to be after a poor start. Afterall they have already lost to Kent and Nottinghamshire in the championship.

Following on now due to kamikaze batting and dreadful tactics allowing a 72 last wicket partnership this time yesterday.

Brydon Carse with 104* on return from his ban.

Durham been sorely shafted by umpires this game. Alas due to their decisions are 156 runs behind with Somerset not enforcing follow on.

Lancashire 4/16 in the first hour and a quarter today. Yesterday they couldn't even get Abbas out in the first hour plus. Relegation form.

Dawson 104* and 5/47 and 5/52
Hartley (same match at his home ground) 15-1-49-1 plus 2 and 10.

demonstrating performance in county cricket is irrelevant? That before watching his first innings dismissal.

Clearly inspired by Farhan, who's already taken one in Surrey's second innings. It's hard to see Surrey having enough time to win this one. They'd probably have to declare 300 ahead half way through the second session and try to dismiss Notts in 3 and a bit hours, which would take some doing on this wicket. And the weather forecast suggests there won't be a full day's play anyway. The likeliest outcome is that Essex and Somerset will make up the ground they lost in the previous round of matches.

EDIT
This is my first look at Farhan on the live stream from Trent Bridge.

Not bad. From the last 3 balls of his over to the very experienced Ryan Patel, two went past the edge and the other was nearly chopped on.

If Farhan was to make his debut in Pakistan (and I certainly wouldn't put it past the McStokes regime), I think he'd be the first guy to make his debut for a non-subcontinental side under the age of 17. Might even be younger than Sachin.

Michael Vaughan's 18 year old son Archie has a couple of wickets today, marking his FC debut for Somerset.
