Durham now 5 points away from the Div 2 title.

No game for them this weekend so all Durham eyes will be on Leicestershire to see if they drop points to guarantee promotion.

Samit Patel leaves Nottinghamshire after 22 years

Former England all-rounder Samit Patel will leave Nottinghamshire after 22 years at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old has made 629 appearances for the county across all formats, scoring almost 21,000 runs and taking more than 700 wickets.
He has won two County Championship titles, one-day trophies and two T20 Blast competitions with the club.

"It has been a privilege and an honour to represent Nottinghamshire," Patel told the club website.

"The club has played a huge role in developing the young nine-year-old I was when I joined the club to become the cricketer I am today."

Patel said he still felt he had "a lot to offer to the game with bat and ball" and was "looking forward to beginning the next chapter".

He made his senior Notts debut as a 16-year-old and has gone on to be acknowledged as a legendary all-rounder at Trent Bridge.

He was instrumental in helping the Outlaws to double white-ball success in 2017, and earned the Professional Cricket Association's Most Valuable Player and the PCA Player of the Year awards for his efforts.

As well as starring for Notts for more than two decades, he shone for Trent Rockets in the Hundred and helped them win the 2022 competition as leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets.

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said Patel, who made 60 appearances for England across all formats between 2008 and 2015, "always wanted to be the man to get Notts over the line".

"Samit richly deserves the adulation he will get as his time at Notts comes to a close," Newell said.

"That we associate him so closely with the club shows how important he has been in the successes we have achieved over the last two decades, and what a favourite he has become with our members and supporters.

"To have his kind of longevity at one club is no mean feat, and speaks volumes of his passion for the county, and the regard in which he has been held by his coaches and peers across his career here."

Alongside his lengthy Notts career, Patel has featured in numerous T20 competitions globally, playing 390 matches in the format worldwide.

Always amazes me that Samit played sixty times for England whilst making Arjuna Ranatunga look slim. Still, a better ODI record than Moeen Ali.

Think you'll find it was Devon not Cheshire who were 4th in their division.

How Surrey keep their huge squad both satisfied and under the salary cap has long perplexed me.
McKerr went out on loan to three different counties this year Kent, Notts and Derby. Geddes to Kent. Moriarty to Yorkshire. All for short periods does that come off the wage bill?

Don’t know, however as players are usually on 12 month contracts and those would not be among the top earners it would barely dent the overall bill.

I don't think it would come off the wage bill. Surrey have had loads of players missing for the 100. So the fringe players got some action in the 1 day cup of which they were poor in

Titles in both are pretty much sewn up, intriguing battle for who goes up with Durham and who they will replace.

If the forecast stays decent then my good lady is accompanying me to day 1 of Lancs/Middx on Sunday. Not sure she will enjoy it as much as The Hundred, but.

I’ve said on here before that I struggle to emotionally invest in the domestic game as much as some of you because my local county (Cheshire) is a minor one, but I just don’t get to enough cricket, and with our kids being pretty much never here we have a lot of time on our hands outside of work. So Lancs memberships next season are on the cards

Will try and get along to a few Cheshire games though, it’s just down the road where they play most of them so there’s no excuse.

I would encourage the last paragraph. Pretty much where I am but at the north rather than the south side of Lancashire. Give it a go, you will get back more than you put in. Cheshire have some good players.

Notts have just announced an overseas signing for their three September matches - Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando.

I make that 100 overseas signings this year, although no doubt a handful never turned up for one reason or another. Even high 90s must be some sort of a record with more than a few counties onto the 7th or even 8th signing.

An unusual set of matches this round with the top teams in each division not playing. In division 1 each match pits one of the bottom three against a team seemingly secure in mid-table. In division 2 Sussex v Leics seems the key game.
