Englands fielding and catching?

What’s with the last few years especially behind the slips? They seem to drop a crap load behind there plus I don’t think their fielding is too great either. Half their team looks slow as hell on the boundary.

Anyone has any theories behind it. I think the guys that play t20 and one dayers more and are apart of that set up with their countries are much better fielders and catchers

I'm surprised as BMac was a real stickler for fielding as NZ captain and even turned himself from a world-class keeper to a top quality fielder when he gave up the gloves.

I think the main reason is that Poms are naturally a bit unco. This is proven by the fact their 2 best fielders in recent years are from Barbados (Jordan) and NZ (Stokes).

I keep hearing all these references to playing golf and not practising all that much. Are they that casual about it or is it all media BS like so much other stuff? Be surprised if they weren’t working hard at it. Sometimes you just have a run where **** goes pear shaped

I'd be very surprised if we didn't practice as hard as any other team.

The real problem though has obviously been Bairstow.

Whilst he's never been the best keeper, he's always been adequate.

Whether he's lost a bit of confidence since his injury or he's not 100% physically is hard to tell but the difference between him and Carey has been massive.

this test would've been won by now if not for the catching
now its a virtual dead even- depending on Stokes performance coming up

Ponting was always adamant that there were absolutely no shortcuts for fielding - yes some are more naturally gifted than others but at this level it's mostly just a function of the quality, intensity and amount of practice you get.

But yeah this is correct. The outcricket between the two sides has been of roughly comparable (middling) quality, with both sides spilling ones that really should have been taken, but the yawning gap in the quality of the keepers is more an abyss at this point.

You'd have to think not. Baz put a huge weight on fielding as NZ captain and I doubt it's much different now. But yeah I would imagine they're just in their own heads a bit, certainly Root seems to be. And Bairstow just isn't a test level keeper, nor is he agile.

I said it at the time when it became obvious they were going to drop Foakes..........it has pilled a **** ton of additional pressure on Bairstow to perform with the gloves. Like you say he was always adequate as a keeper and never this terrible. Blokes probably overthinking and trying too hard.....he'd know he's keeping a far better gloveman out the side and who knows if that's making him tense out there?

I think he's mostly just not moving or reacting as smoothly as he used to because he's 33.

I'm 33 and if I claimed the decline in my athletic ability was because I was "overthinking and trying too hard" everybody would laugh because I'd obviously be in denial.

I don’t want to bag the bloke as he’s coming back from a fair amount of time off through injury, but I don’t think the paddock he’s been in while away from the game helps his lateral movement with the gloves

That's 33 with a chunky build and an injury history, do we really need to think too hard about why his keeping has gone from mediocre to shite.
