England Tour Squad for Australia

Looks like England have simply been suckered in by the pace and bounce stereotype of Australian pitches.

One and a half swing bowlers (depending on which Broad turns up) may yet bite them in the behind.

Not being picked for England will do so much more for Onions' reputation than playing for them ever did, that's for sure.

I presume you're talking about Edgbaston 09 where Anderson certainly didn't bowl dross in the first innings. Bizarre.
He bowled toothless rubbish (10-0-45-0) up until Onions brought England back into the game by working over the top order and putting the pressure on. Anderson ended up with the headlines but it was Onions who'd had the biggest impact and bowled far better than anyone else.

Yeah, when you look at the attack it does lack balance (if you pun the pun). Onions for Finn would have been the logical move, especially after 2010/11 where he didn't bowl very well there. Surely the fact Australia don't have any giant quick bowlers should hint at the fact we don't need 4?

FWIW I agree with you 100% about Onions omission, but it's long been clear that that part of your post I have highlighted is his lot in life

This must be a different Edgbaston match that I'm thinking of because I swear that Onions' main contribution was taking two wickets with the first two balls of the second day (I remember the second of those dismissals especially well, was the cause of much irritated grumbling for some time afterwards)

Ha ha, yes.

Apparently, Jimmy will get scorn for 10-0-45-0 but we'll ignore Onion's first day bowling won't we (3 overs for 21), that clearly wasn't toothless.

Well he saved two Test matches with the bat, so he's had his headlines too.

Ooh look marc's displaying his sparkling maths skills again.

Couldn't believe they chose Panesar. What a pisser

Not sure what's so funny.......trousers round his ankles and his dick in one hand he'll still be a better spin option than anything the Aussie have got.
Not sure I'd take him over Lyon but his selection certainly isn't debatable

Who would you have chosen as the 2nd spinner?

What I find most baffling about the squad is the lack of experience and change of thoughts. Three people in their first test squads, one bloke in his second. It's strange for this England management to make so many big decisions on the eve of the biggest tour. Begs the question about some of the summer selection as well. Why was Taylor in the squad at Old Trafford, why did Woakes play at the Oval, why did Compton play for Worcestershire and why was Onions picked in 5 of the test squads he was available for this summer? And more importantly, what's changed that's made them suddenly think these players aren't the ones to go for anymore. I have reservations about the only back up bowlers all being 6'8 hit the deck bowlers as well. Remember the last time we had an attack like that?

most interesting thing for me is that I would have thought if any player, aside from woakes and kerrigan, showed that they weren't currently ready and should be left at home, it's Bairstow, not Onions, Compton or Taylor. I would have picked Davies or even JOS
