It’s not too late to call up David Malan out of retirement to bolster a weak, under-performing batting line-up. He is performing well for Yorkshire, is ranked 16th behind Jos Buttler higher up and well ahead of Johnny Bairstow at 30th. Top run scorer for England by far in the recent ODI World Cup and then is summarily dropped for a comparatively low run rate! Well, at least he is scoring runs which is not apparent for most of the England team. Pick a team to win. Not because someone thinks he is too old. What utterly baffling logic.

I said at the time that moving on from Malan was nonsense. Clearly makes our best 11 on performance and we miss his reliability hugely.

Yep, point taken. I’m musing and wishing that there’d be clearer thinking made around selections based on actual performance rather than around the thought that being older makes you less competent. Dhoni, Anderson etc!

Yeah Duckett is the best bet. Gives a left hander as well which we lack at the mo.

I think both Jacks and Livingstone need a score otherwise Duckett will be banging the door down.

I know the other 2 bowl but particularly with Jacks, it's only the odd over here and there.

I'm not the biggest Jacks fan TBH, I would have started Duckett over him anyway.

Jacks and Livingstone absolutely stealing squad places at the mo.

There's always the argument their slow stuff elevates them over Duckett, but Malan's leggies (and Root's offies, if it comes to that) compare pretty favourably with Jacks's efforts with the ball thus far.

Livingstone bats at seven and on a good day you get four overs from him. I'd rather have him at seven as the second spinner than Curran or Wakes batting way too high.

Been wondering for this whole tournament why Jos and co don't feel confident enough to bat Bairstow at 3 and Brook at 4. Bairstow has a much better strike rate at 3 than at 4 and is generally a better top order player. Brook is supposed to be our generational talent and yet we squander that routinely having him face a handful of deliveries at 5.

I know we sort of just stumbled into this combination due to the shortened game, but the side that we have feels a lot more balanced than the one we played against Australia. Will Jacks has a top score of 40 despite batting in the top 3 for his entire international career, there's no way he should be holding down a place in the top 3. Sam Curran is always a better value - good enough to bat in the top 7 and can float up or down as needed (and provides a left handed option). Also, having 7 bowling options means that we have a lot more flexibility with bowling options regardless of how the conditions turn out.

Yeah not sure about the whole lineup but unconvinced by Jacks and Bairstow/Brook at 3/4 is the way to go

If they do feel like they need the extra batter, it'd make more sense to jam him in at 6/7 after Livingstone (which is where they've had him bat in ODIs a couple of times). Currently, him batting at 3 destabilizes the entire batting lineup.

If Malan and David Willey are considered too old to play for England, then why are Chris Jordan, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid not?
