I think the team I would go with for the beginning of next summer would be something like:

Cook
Root
Pietersen
Ballance
Bell
Prior (having been told he'll be sacked if he doesn't improve drastically and rapidly)
Stokes
Broad
Borthwick
Jordan
Anderson

Cooky Monster

U19 12th Man
This is a really good post found on another forum...

Ill omen is right. Flower has already stated he wants more control if he is going to continue. That doesn't sound like a man opening a window to fresh air. It sounds like a door being banged shut. He has qualities of ruthlessness but where are his qualities of wise judgement if he has run through 20 players and only salvaged one (Trott)? The same Trott who unwisely was allowed to carry on until he had a breakdown causing panic and alarm in the dressing room according to reports (George Dobell, Cricinfo).

We know Test players don't grow on trees, but the failure to find even a replacement for Paul Collingwood who retired 3 years ago doesn't bode well. Never mind that Flower has been tinkering with the opening partner for Cook. Flower ruthlessly got rid of Compton we know. Root proved to be another unwise choice for 2 er 3. Now Carberry might be chucked back into the pond. Whatever happened to Taylor? Do we need to trawl through the vissitudes of Bairstow, Bopara, Morgan, Ballance?

In fact the so-called best of coaches has an appalling track record for judging new recruits. A weakness he displayed when he ran the ODI side. He was forever chopping and changing and making wild selections based on one innings. This is the guy to run the new era? He likes young men around him, ones he can control and manipulate, the problem is they don't last.

What he doesn't like is a strong personality like KP who might disagree with his mighty management and say so. The coach is a control freak who surely is descending into a kind of madness to choose this moment to pick a fight with KP. To say he goes or I go. KP is a player who might be loved or hated but he is a very fine batsman, a world class player who is poorly managed by Flower who is stifling the life out of him. I could say Flower is stifling everyone. Flower should go. He's the Director of Cricket and responsible for the dressing room environment. He's accountable for the shocking collapse of morale. Maybe his real faults are becoming plainer as he excuses himself from blame. He says only Cook is safe (Atherton, Times). Well he's honest about his favouritism at last.

Whilst the stuff may be true about Flower, Pietersen and his narcissistic ways have been unsettling and causing problems in dressing rooms his whole career- well before flower turned up.

Maybe it'll be a KP/Moores situation and they'll both get the sack.

Regardless of his personality issues he has two factors that make him a potential 'sacrificial scapegoat'

He is the oldest of the current players with an average injury record over the last few years.
Indifferent performances over a long period. Averages 36(2013) and 43(2012). Averaging 44.53 over the last 5 years is hardly the form of a great batsman. Bell, Cook and Trott all average more than him during that time.

We have no idea what has happened behind the scenes obviously, although most signs point towards Pietersen being as committed as he can be. The bottom line, though, is that having a 'sacrificial scapegoat' is a remarkably idiotic thing to consider, let alone that scapegoat being our best batsman, and to state that if Pietersen is in the team then Flower's own position is untenable frankly only goes to show a lack of commitment and pettiness on Flower's part.
