Burns on another score at New Road, currently 78* of 140. Surely the selectors can't be so stupid as to not pick the lad? The guy has been the standout bat in Division one all year and is absolutely bossing it.

Will confess that I'm not yet convinced by Curran. Hardly coming in and filling a gap we actually need, lower order batsman and 4th seamer. That said, if Rashid can still get a game as a specialist number 9 then there's bigger problems to sort first.
Rashid is a top class bowler. Curran is a top class all-rounder.

Burns has been epic this season. Boss mode batting at this stage if he hits a ton. Talk about ramming it in the face of the selectors.

What I will say further in Curran's favour is if he does go and have a bad tour of SL, he seems like he's got enough up to properly learn from it and improve his game as a result, rather than it destroying his confidence and setting him back.
He is a sponge, learns from anything be it good or bad. He may yet end up as a better bat than bowler but Stokes won't be here in 5 years time and he will be in his prime. Be a bloody useful 4th bowler being a left armer.

For me he isn't the finished article but we stick with him now through thick and thin like we did with Broad. No idea if his bowling will be anywhere near as good but his batting could be so much better.

Woakes' pace was down on pace again this summer. Last test he played he was the slowest of England's 4 pace bowlers in both innings. He likely will go because of the allround qualities but I don't really want to see him in SL getting it down at 80mph.

Would prefer him working to get back some of his pace - dunno if it's a lack of fitness or technical - but he needs to find some more pace. Fine getting it down at 82mph when it's swinging around in test cricket in England, but in ODI cricket or tests overseas he needs to be back averaging mid 80s mph pace.

I agree with this, plus the constant injuries are a concern. I'm sure that he was getting it down 86-88 mph during 2016 when he first got back into the team.

Plus if it means that we end up having 4 low 80's right arm lads in the team instead of having Curran as the 4th offering variety in Sri Lanka because he's been take I think we're making a mistake not going for the variety with the left arm.

There are some epic picks by telegraph writers for the first test in SL. The Alan Tyers selection probably the best. He's managed to pick 3 wks, 6 bowlers, and no Anderson or Broad who are both rested, oh and Ali is back opening the batting.
His team would be more respectable if he picked Vince over Bairstow. I still understand his thinking. They are three keepers, but they can all bat. Some of our all-rounders are better options with the bat right now than players that claim to be front-line batsman. These pitches might rag square from ball one, so he's taken the best available keeper (Foakes). In an ideal world all the writers would want to see, and assess, the pitch then pick their team. To be fair any team one comes up with for Sri Lanka is debatable. It's hard to work out the exact best side for the conditions. I'd leave Bairstow out and play Vince instead. My openers are Burns and Vince I think. Burns deserves his chance. Working out the second opener is a nightmare for me. Vince's form and test average against spin makes him a nice option. Vince has failed many times in tests. That's probably why he went with Burns and Ali disregarding Vince. Anderson wants to play in Sri Lanka. I doubt Anderson is getting rested. But he probably picked that team before Jimmy came out demanding to play. Berry's team is more questionable for me. Leaving out Burns. Wigmore has picked Jennings which is criminal.

On the positive side, Hoult picked a really good team.

Hoult's selections: Burns, Gubbins, Vince, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, Moeen, Curran, Leach, Anderson.

How can you not take Leach?! Proven himself every year as our best spinner when the ball turns and Sri Lanka spins more than anywhere else lol.
Leach is my spinner. I only have room for Leach or Rashid. I went for Leach after some thought. More control. Benefits more from turning deck.
