England players and selection discussion thread

Bit harsh to say Jos failed, IMHO.

Average of ~32 maybe not what one would've hoped from a generational talent, but it stacks up pretty well against most keeper/batsmen.

Victim of the expectations he created for himself.
As a keeper, he averaged a shade under 30 with the bat, which is not great by any stretch

Given his age and how unforgiving a five match tour of Australia is on the body, I'd be surprised to see him in an England shirt again.

Never understood why he busted his hump in a format he was rubbish in. Wood is made for overseas series. Just wrap him on cotton wool otherwise

Would have been nice to have him and Archer alternating between Tests Down Under, but with this latest setback for Wood and with Archer now playing in the IPL, I’m not sure we’ll see either of them in England whites again. For all our focus on raw pace with a view to the Ashes, Carse might well be our quickest bowler this winter, by no means slow, but not in the same league as Archer or Wood at their peaks…I suppose it’s just as well recent years have shown that raw pace is not necessarily the way to go Down Under

England will likely debut a fast bowler in the Ashes. Just wait. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. They'll lose 5 or 4 nil.

Expect a Jafar Chouhan test debut in the fifth game as well.

Still reckon pace in AUS is overrated. Boland barely bowls over 80mph.
Exactly, maybe they’ve not watched much Test cricket in Australia of late, but the wickets aren’t as flat as they used to be, sure it still helps to be tall and quick, but there’s no reason someone with a bit of guile can’t work there too. He’s been ignored for a long time, but I do wonder with his success on the Lions tour there, will Sam Cook be in consideration? Since county form is almost disregarded (and not without reason with it being so different to the Test arena), hopefully getting a Lions call-up shows that he is still in the picture

Can't go as bad as Tom Curran did on that tour.

I reckon Ollie Robinson would have toured for sure, had he been fit/his head been straight, and he's not troubling the speed gun. This obsession with pace has the hallmarks of Duncan Fletcher and his selection of Saj Mahmood and Liam Plunkett Mk 1. Just pick your best bowlers.

Robinson was great in Australia last time as well as well, it’s not as if we haven’t had advanced warning that pace is not the be all and end all
