England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

maybe one of the three spinners can keep?

not wishing ill health on any player but Cox getting injured might not be the worst thing for Englands chances. he looks absolutely rank at international level to date. would be great if ollie robinson got his long overdue call up.
They are giving it to Pope and picking Bethell for he first test it seems.

Obviously not enough time to get a replacement out there. Absolute morons not selecting a backup keeper and advantage New Zealand.

No doubt it's not ideal but it's for a solitary Test, it's not likely going to tip the scales between us being favourites or not.

The crazy nature of Test cricket over the past month says there's a lot bigger factors than this at play

The fact that the backup batsman is Bethell seems a lot more insane to me than no backup keeper when there are two serviceable part time keepers in the top order.

They had already said they weren't sure if Cox could keep all 3 before we'd even left Pakistan.

As soon it was announced Smith wasn't going to keep they should have announced they were calling up a backup keeper batsman. I mean going in with only 1 backup batsman that is barely a batsman in Bethell is just further nonsense anyway.

We only seem to have 1 backup batsman at time under McCullum! Was Lawrence for a while and then Cox.

Pope is under massive pressure and him now having to keep and I assume bat 3 isn't going to help him at all.

There’s also the question of who bats where now too. BazBall has done some excellent things, but there’s a lot of ****ing stupid in there too, the Cox/Bethell selections just the latest.

5 to win and 1 wicket to get. Play on a couple more overs.

I hope England get pumped in NZ. Whilst the Bazball was a breath of fresh air a couple of Summers ago, it's just become incredibly frustrating, so I'd be happy for its demise to be accelerated (basically, get Key out).

But there are some good things happening too. All of a sudden a half decent crop of seamers have been brought through and look ready for Test Cricket (something Australia haven’t sorted). Smith has been a revelation. They just **** it up with some real dumb **** that isn’t needed.

Robinson or Rew were such more obvious picks.

I see the logic though in wanting to try out the spare batsman, who you’re more likely to need again in the future than a backup keeper.

Bethell as the new spare batsman is the more questionable call. But hey, he’s here now and he’s been in good white ball nick so you never know.

According to Cricinfo Pope won’t be the keeper.

‘A replacement will be announced in due course, with Durham's Ollie Robinson expected to be handed a maiden call-up, ahead of England's white-ball regular Phil Salt and Essex's Michael Pepper, who toured the Caribbean with the limited-overs side. Other keeping options included Somerset's James Rew and Lancashire's Matty Hurst, both of whom are due to tour South Africa with the Lions. Jonny Bairstow, still with a year remaining on his central contract, is unlikely to be recalled at this juncture.
Ollie Pope stood in for Cox for the culmination of the warm-up fixture, but England will not want to burden him with more responsibility on top of his duties at No. 3.
Jacob Bethell and Rehan Ahmed will join the rest of the squad in Christchurch on Monday after a few days off following the white-ball tour of the Caribbean which finished last week. Cox's replacement should be on deck in the next 48 hours.’

Oh well that explains a lot of things. They were happy to just fly someone else over it need be.

Bethell as the spare bat isn’t the issue for me, very green but has made a good start to international cricket in the white ball stuff, but there really is no harm in naming a slightly bigger squad so you have cover for your top order and your wicket-keeper, they don’t seem to appreciate how specialist those roles are these days (which is odd because Alex Lees, not a BazBaller by any means, but an actual opening batter played in the early days of BazBall!)

The replacement might be in the country within 48 hours, but will they be in any fit state to play Test cricket? Wouldn’t surprise me if Pope takes the gloves in the first **** and Bethell plays
