Think this is a balanced team. Wicketkeeper position is really the only position I thought over for a long period of time, decided to go with Ames because his record is quite brilliant. Could get into the team on his batting credentials alone but his Keeping record is also quite extraodinary. I would even consider bringing Tich Freeman into the side in place of Verity due to Ames' partnership and understanding with Tich.
Very strong top 6 with a world class all-rounder coming in at 7. Also a very accomplished tail with Verity, Trueman and Lohmann all having a First-Class Century under their belts.
Bowling wise we have 4 Top-notch Fast Bowlers in Trueman, Barnes, Lohmann and Botham with Verity, who I think is the best spinner England has ever produced and would have gone on to acheive great things for England had the war not intervened. We also have Hammond providing some bowling and Barrington could put his much underated Leg-Spin into practise.

Gower was one of the best strokeplayers that England have ever had and although Lohmann didn't have the longest of careers, well, look at his stats. I know that stats shouldn't be the only basis of judgement but in his case they are quite special.
Just because you don't agree with the selection doesn't mean it's wrong.

Yeah, totally agree twctopcat. I think it's very much a personal thing and, in my opinion, that would be my All-Time England XI. Obviously people are going to disagree and have their own opinions.twctopcat said:

I think that with the top order's strength, we can afford to pick the best possible wicketkeeper, the one whom Evans kept out by being a better batsman.
