International Coach
His uh, oft-quoted average of 84 vs Australia is misleading. He has 11 innings against them, with 4 not outs. His only century against us came in a drawn match on a sedate pitch. (England had 4 tons in their innings, and there were 7 tons scored overall in the match - both records still tied for equal third)

He also filled his boots in a high scoring series in SA.

I guess Cook has more credits. Someone like Leyland or Shrewsbury might provide a stiffer challenge.

Johan

State Vice-Captain
Cook singlehandely led England to an Ashes win down under and a win against India in India, Paynter doesn't have the credentials

Shrewsbury has a better record in low scoring games than Hill and Trumper IIRC. Think he was one of the best pre world war one batsmen.
Shrewsbury was the guy after Grace and before Ranji; for some even ahead of the later. Definitely doesn't gets mentioned enough.
