I stand by my view that the weather NEVER saves us, typically though it seems to be actively hindering us - because bad light is the only thing preventing me from calling today a Lou Reed.
We took the last two wickets for just 12 runs this morning, meaning we mopped up the Yorkshire tail by taking 4-12 - “a rare delight” as Mr Sugden from Kes would say. After that, despite incredibly testing conditions, we were able to get through to Lunch with only one blemish on the scorebook and even more impressively, we’ve seen the runs flowing all afternoon without any further loss.
Weather forecast for Day 3 looks like an improvement on today, but the long range forecast suggests we’ll be very lucky to get a full days play on Monday.
We need to get 186 more runs as quickly as possible and then re-assess. Could be that we declare at that point, I’m not sure we can get to a ‘traditional’ bat once total such as a 550 or a 600 in the time that’s left, whilst also leaving enough time to take ten wickets on what appears to be another good pitch for batting. Might be that we look to get a lead of maybe 250 and then pull the plug, but given the time we’ve already lost I would still like to think we give ourselves enough time so that we can chase a modest total on the last day should it come to that.
To revisit my opening paragraph, it’s incredibly frustrating that the one time this season we’ve put ourselves in a position to force home our advantage, we’re being robbed of the time to actually do it. Where was this weather when we were under the pump at Trent Bridge or last week?
