I’m struggling to work out whether yesterday was a good day for us or not, we may be behind the pace in terms of this game, but with the injury crisis we faced coming into it the bowlers did their job and the big story for me so far from our perspective has got to be how we were able to do so well in bowling a side out for 162 with three new starters in the lineup - I’m excited to see how they go in their next few innings.
I think Worcestershire are strong favourites as the game currently stands, there’s every chance we could be winless after four games (and this isn’t going to be a draw) and of course the threat of relegation is both a massive concern and a growing possibility all of a sudden. A possibility that many of us wouldn’t have thought could occur when we previewed the season.
The injury crisis to the bowling corps has been well documented, but the loss of Bedingham and Gay shouldn’t be overlooked, it may be argued in this game alone their loss is more impactful to us than the bowling situation.
For today, I think this is a time more than any other where we have to bat with a positive mindset. We were probably victims of circumstance last night, we wouldn’t be so obdurate normally but when you’ve only got 25 overs to negotiate it’s natural to think about survival and to prioritise that over anything else. The two wickets Waite took were ridiculous. Purely and simply down to the substandard pitch, but when you’re faced with a situation where it’s only a matter of time, I want our boys to come out swinging.
If we’re bowling before lunch we’re in big trouble, BUT there’s every chance that we could be doing that through no fault of the batsmen, just because the pitch is a joke, which is why I say what I do about positivity. If we only last 25 overs more, but score at 6 an over, we’ll have a lead. There’s no point trying to see out the session and only going along at 2/2.5 an over because doing that would still see us in a deficit anyway.
I’m not sure what Blatherwick is like at slogging, but as a night-watchman it might be well worth having getting stuck into the bowling. If anyone is able to make it happen, it gives the bowlers a problem, because we can’t allow knackers like Waite to come in and bowl maiden after maiden like he did yesterday. He’s ended up with 2-3 off 7 overs but it makes a mockery of the game because he didn’t bowl half as well as Raine did.
Bizarrely, the bookies have Worcestershire at 5/4 and us favourites still at 8/15 🫣
