why the sudden barrington hate from you? you didn't have to sit through it for a start he's like 100000 years older than you.

i don't really have much of an opinion on atgs from so long ago apart from total respect.
Probably a case of parroting opinions from his contemporaries. Barrington just doesn't seem all that rated by them for whatever reason.

contemporary opinions are worthless. imagine if they were all we had to go on for todays players in 50 years time. people need to realise 98% of former players with high media profiles are clinically brain dead.

No hate. Just my Hutton love. Ftr I feel the same way about rating systems which overrate Chanders. Barrington's record is excellent and I have a lot of respect for the things he did like withstanding brutal pace bowling in the West Indies. Just think most of these guys have more X factor than obdurate Ken. Guys like Kallis and Barrington will always be below the Tendulkars and Soberses for me.

I've actually come full circle on Barrington. At first I thought it was reverse Trumper syndrome in that a not so flashy but excellent player was getting criminally underrated. Then I dug deeper by going through match and series reports and realised that whilst he was certainly being underrated (definitely better than Dexter, May and Harvey imo), his raw stats don't tell the full story.

Bradman missed 7 years in his prime due to World War 2. Bradman scored 45000+ runs and 19 centuries between 1930-1938. If Bradman played during that time, he would scored another 4000 odd runs and 20 odd centuries. Bradman would have ended his career with 10000+ runs and 50 centuries. Truly the GOAT.
Lots of potentially good bowlers were killed in WWII and the Don was lucky he never faced them.

Seriously does no one want to talk about that great batsman who scored a triple versus O'Reilly as a young'un then came out on top against Lindwall and Miller basically trying to Bodyline him without being able to hook because one of his arms was shorter than the other? Probably one of my favourite players of all time. An adjusted SR of 44 isn't half bad either. Between that victorious Ashes tour of Australia and the 1953/54 tour of WI it is hard to pick Hutton's greatest achievement.

Barrington ahead of Hutton is a real buzzkill though.
This exactly. Breaking Bradman's record in front and against O'Reilly of all people was gigantic. Overcoming the injury was mind boggling.

Just accomplished and overcame so much.

Greatest opener ever in my opinion.

Wasim Akram has received the most peer acclaim for any bowler. It doesn’t make him the greatest.

In 30 years Sanga and Philander will appear in some ATG XIs and we won't have any excuses. Will feel weird.

sangakkara can play fast bowling. scored a ridiculous ton against bond on a green deck before crossing the tasman to score big against the aussies at hobart. not his fault he doesn't get to play australia or england in a massively one sided affair every 18 months that's supposed to be crickets premier series.
As opposed to the once-every-four-year massively one sided series which just finished in the New Year over here.

I think he was too, him or Hobbs. But tbf I think the triple was the least of the achievements you listed tbh. That Oval deck was so flat the Pommie skipper didn't declare until Bradman rolled his ankle and couldn't bat. Hutton's knock was basically the death knell for timeless tests.

you're not going to get any debate from me on that one even though we dicked the poms two weeks before it. sangakkara was the wagner of a non nz side so your bait doesn't really work.

Wags must be far more universally loved than Sanga, who I suspect fits into the Haze category of being a bit of a sly **** bloke.

I did post earlier what would be a reasonable excuse. Sanga's record in SENA countries is not that flash. It's not as bad as Sehwag's but not good enough to be a contender for ATG XI.
