I have some questions I want to put to cricketweb posters as I value your opinion:

1. The minor factors are point of entry (20/3 vs. 200/1 etc.), fall of wickets whilst at the crease, and finally runs made with the lower order (after the fall of the 5th wicket). Which of these three factors would you deem the most important?

At the moment, I have given runs made with the lower order double the weight over point of entry and fall of wickets. My reasoning is point of entry doesn't tell you what happened after that point in the innings (did the batsman score 200 or 30). It also disadvantages openers who cannot get any points.

Fall of wickets disadvantages lower order players and also gives no context to how the team innings went. For example, did your team go from 300/2 to 400 all out or 80/5 to 250 all out.

On the other hand, runs with the lower order provides a clear context of how you rescued your team from a bad situation (the measurement is % of total team runs made with the lower order).

2. Should I have maximum and minimum values for pitch conditions? For example, Sober's 365 sits at a lowly 13.00 rating. The RPW for the match (more weight given to the 790/3 innings in which Sobers batted in) is a huge 110.00. If I introduced a maximum of say, 65.00 then Sober's rating shoots up to 16.00.

3. In addition, I have dropped the partnership factor. I wanted to judge individual batting performances and not partnerships. Or am I wrong about this and it should be a minor factor?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers.

The factor of match situation a player enters at is the most important to me at first glance, however the reality is that it's the loss of wickets that hurts most. An innings played with wickets falling around you and batting more and more with lower order bats normally creates the extra runs a team needs.

This list starts from the wrong premise - the greatest innings ever is Stan McCabe's 187* in 32/33, and DoG needs to adjust his formula to reflect that

At the moment, the base weighting (without taking into consideration match result, series status, opposition, and context) is calculated by giving weight to the following criteria:

Base runs scored/Base strike rate (x4)
Runs/Strike rate index (taking into consideration match conditions) (x8)
% of team runs scored (x4)
Point of entry (x1)
Fall of wickets whilst at the crease (x1)
Highest partnership involved in (x1)
& of team runs scored with the lower order (x1)

These base factors should add up to 20.00. If I take out highest partnership then one of the minor criteria has to be given a weighting of 2. Which is why I was asking which one was most important.

Not sure about the weightage but the partnership thing should definitely be a factor. It's one of the things I liked about your rating over many others... Creating and batting in big partnerships is a skill and they change games. Should factor into the calculation somewhere.

I am sure there are others that I haven't rated yet. Can you suggest any great innings under 100?

I have been adjusting all sub-100 innings down, i.e. an innings of 73 gets 73% of its total value. The reason I have been doing this is that I don't want to give sub 100 scores the same credit for winning a match against good opposition as other scores above 100. If I didn't do that, here are the best sub-100 innings:

Nourse 93* 18.39
Laxman 73 17.90
Viswanath 97 17.74
Flintoff 68 17.08
Cairns 80 17.01
Laxman 96 16.47
Knott 73* 15.12
Sehwag 83 14.96
Border 98* 14.50
Gavaskar 96 14.49
Dravid 81 14.33
Dravid 68 13.00

I'm considering adjusting sub-50 scores downwards instead of sub-100s.

Here is another question: in calculating a match average runs per wicket, how much more weight would you give to the innings in which a batsman played his innings against the other innings in the match. Twice as much? Three times as much?

For example, in an innings of 500-5 against the total analysis in the other innings of 900-30, the match average would be (500*3+900)/(5*3+30) = 53.33

If two times weight is used it would be (500*2+900)/(5*2+30) = 47.50

This may look like a marginal difference but it makes a big change to the batting and bowling lists.

Here is the Top 100 bowling performances, with three times weight given to the innings in which the bowler got his figures

If only 2 times weight is given to the innings in question, then McGrath goes to no.2 and Jerome Taylor's 5-11 jumps up into the top 20.

I don't think 2 times weight gives as much emphasis to the innings in question as 3 times weight would do.
