Does Jadeja make your India ATG XI?

If you had to pick on lineup for all conditions?
It is so hard really.

3 pacers + 2 spinners is a way to go if we I am told to pick the XI without knowing the conditions.

Bumrah
Kapil
Ashwin
Kumble
Shami

Yes, have to go with these 5 names. Kumble will strengthen the bowling for sure and you don't really need any more batting with Kapil at 7, Ashwin at 8 and even Kumble who can bat a bit at 9.

Precisely my thinking. Though I prefer Zak to Shami.

Making a team for all conditions is a bit tough for India; as Indian conditions are vastly different from most others. Make an Australian ATG team, it will do wonders in England also. Same doesn't works for India. So if it's an ATG team in no particular setting, I would still go with 3 spinners for India.

ATG India team:
Sunil Gavaskar
Virendra Sehwag
Rahul Dravid
Sachin Tendulkar
Virat Kohli
M S Dhoni (c)
Ravindra Jadeja
Kapil Dev
Ravichandran Ashwin
Anil Kumble
Jasprit Bumrah

On playing India, the team would remain the same. But it will change massively on tours. Like for ex:

In Australia:
Sunil Gavaskar
Virendra Sehwag
Vijay Hazare
Sachin Tendulkar
Virat Kohli (c)
V V S Laxman
Rishabh Pant
Kapil Dev
Anil Kumble
Mohammad Shami
Jasprit Bumrah

In England:
Sunil Gavaskar
Vijay Merchant
Rahul Dravid
Sachin Tendulkar
Vijay Hazare
M S Dhoni (c)
Vinoo Mankad
Ravichandran Ashwin
Amar Singh
Zaheer Khan
Jasprit Bumrah

That's cheating man, we can't do country specific. Defeats the purpose of an ATG side.

pretty obvious really. Kumble comes as an alternative to Shami not Jadeja

I think that's the point, different players will do different in different conditions. It's less beneficiary to carry Sehwag in England than someone like Gautam Gambhir. Anyways, you could count the team to play in India as the ATG one. That's the one I will make given any opportunity; I am not putting Shami in a team before Kumble.

The thing is that if you are doing an allround side, having 3 seamers is a must.

So the choice will come between Kumble and Jadeja. Kumble to me is roughly as good in SC and much better away from SC and I go for a better bowling attack.

Whatever it takes!!!
Why replace Bumrah? I'm thinking replace with Zaheer everytime it's needed.

Also, surprised to see Pant in the lineup so early in his hopefully long career. Has he already surpassed, say, Farokh Engineer?
Pant being selected shows how few options we have tbh. I would actually pick MSD in the SC over either Pant or Engineer. And away from home Pant has done well everywhere except NZ. So fair enough to select him IMO.

And I meant resting BUmrah when playing in turning conditions. Mainly coz I feel with 3 spinners and Kapil, the left arm angle would be useful and we need to wrap Bumrah in cotton wool based on series.

Pant has already done more than enough to show him as the best option.

In ATG XI discussion, Picking different versions of the team for different conditions is cheating. Part of the point for me is whether the selected XI can do well in any set of random conditions. This XI covers enough bases to be strong anywhere imo.

So you don't have Kapil in your ATG XI? Are you serious?

India having so many bowling all-rounder options (4) always makes it hard to balance. Jadeja probably makes the 5-bowler version but not the 4-bowler one.

Is it hard to balance, or hard to decide on which players you want and so then balance with them in mind?

Yeah if I were to construct an XI I'd probably pencil Jadeja in even though I'm not sure that's the way to go, just because leaving him out despite being a better player than most of the team selected seems so wrong.

India is still a fair bit stronger in batting than bowling. And they want 2 spinners for home and 3 quicks for away. 5 bowlers is the way if you have to pick a single team for all conditions.

Given Ash is likely to bat 9 inn this line up, I am more than happy to get Kumble in there as SehWAG can provide some offspin when needed.

Jadeja is actually redundant in an ATG XI with Kapil and Ashwin already giving sufficient batting strength and Jadeja's bowling being more limited away.
