Needs a "still undecided option", simply not good enough forcing people to give a yes or no now. *Insert stuck-up smiley that STILL doesn't exist*

Said a fair few times - Johnson isn't and never has been in the top three or even four seamers (in the longer game at least) in Australia, I've never thought otherwise there. But has he done badly enough, right now, to be dropped from the Test team? I don't think so.

Not to mention this post is made in the middle of a match - the final match of a series, what's more. So things can change very quickly. Better time to make this poll IMO would've been at the end of the match and series.

Dicko assumes his usual position then.

All his career he's been fast-tracked on potential rather than performance and that theme continues even now.

He certainly has more physical attributes than any other fast bowler in Australia if not the world, he is fantastically athletic, very strong, very fit, is a reasonable height and naturally generates great pace. Quite clearly he has the raw materials to be a fantastic fast bowler and that has always been obvious since Lillee spotted him at 17 or whatever.

However just at the moment he lacks that extra 10%...that little bit of refinement that seperates someone with potential from a test quality bowler, its the subtle technical things but more than that I think it's a mental thing, he isnt a thinking bowler in the same way someone like say Gillespie or Damien Fleming was.

He is in the test side because he is potentially a world-class bowler hopefully not too far down the track, rather than because he's one of our best three seamers right now.
Although personally im not optimistic, the guy isnt that young he's what 26 or 27? so he's been learning his craft for 10 years now....and he's never set the world on fire at Pura Cup level...I can only remember one outstanding game for QLD...I'd prefer they simply pick the best three or four available seamers and tbh Johnson isnt one of them.

DWTA. Not that he needs to necessarily, but he can't at the moment.

I'm really not sure where I stand with him. I think some of the criticism he gets is quite over the top and unfounded, but at the same time I don't really think he's one of Australia's best three quicks.

I don't really enjoy watching him bowl at all but he's not completely terrible as far as his effectiveness goes.
AWTA on all counts.

I think it has both pros and cons really.
What are the cons? People try to manufacture you saying stuff to prove wrong because there isn't anything actually there to prove wrong properly?

Yeah, you'd be right there, but I happen to think that's the fault of the others, not the fence-sitter.

Haha - I was just saying there are pros and cons to fence sitting - meaning that I couldn't decide which was better -

I was fence sitting. :sleepy:

I am with SOC on this one, he has lot of positives to him atm but still he has a lot of work to do on his bowling if he wants to be a test class bowler, a) he needs to get his wrist position right, b) bowl from both sides of the wicket a lot more often then he does, c) get his yorker fixed and going and d) work on his ability to use reverse swing, if he can do all this then he doesn't even need to swing the ball in conventional fashion, he is one of the quickest bowlers going around atm in world cricket but if he can add some variety into his bowling he could one of the best bowlers in world cricket in the upcoming years.

So i certainly do rate him but at the same time i feel he isn't good enough to be in the Aussie test side atm.
Yeah, well said.

Extremely mediocre bowler. Nowhere near the class of Lee. He could improve though.

In all fairness he is far from a mediocre bowler, he lacks variety and that obviously is a problem but he still is not as bad as you are making him out to be.

I think he's a decent bowler with good potential, but ATM not really concerned at the threat he will pose to the English batsmen next summer. Also, think that Shaun Tait will end up as a better bowler.

He has a really strong action and is a really powerful boy.

Ive said before that Ive often been disappointed with his pace after lots of hype, but he certainly bowls a very heavy ball.

It appears (and I could be wrong) that on the right tracks and in rhythm he can be a real handful. Probably needs to add a little bit more to his game to force wickets when the going is not so fair.

What are his slower ball and bouncer like?

That's been said about just about every seam-bowler who's ever had a poor start to their career - which numbers more bowlers than not.

Just because McGrath got better after a poor start does not necessarily mean anyone else will.
