Its almost as if cricket is a game played by human beings and is heavily influenced by factors such as weather, geology etc. and we really dont have to explain everything.

Its why I feel so much more comfortable rating careers than rating any perceived ability or the lack of it based on stats.

Don't know what is his sample in SL tbf. I have never quite resolved what explains his poor stats in India. Did he have a real weakness against spin (to the extent that would explain his sub 30 average in India) or his average just suffers because of that Harbhajan storm in 2001?
He definitely had technical problems against spin on turning pitches that he didn't ameliorate until later on in his career. Maybe he could have improved on them in 2004 on some of the more docile pitches in that series; we'll never know of course.
