Did Glenn Maxwell today played the best ODI innings of all time?

Was this 201* against Afghanistan the best ODI innings ever

  • No, Saeed Anwar's 194 vs India was better

It was a decent Zimbabwean bowling attack tbf. Rawson, Curran, Fletcher and Traicos all pretty useful, and the match position of 9-4 (and then) 17-5 when Kapil came in isn't dissimilar.
Oh please anyone on this forum could take apart Rhodesia with words let alone a bat.

Maxwell has GOATed it and ODI cricket can now die since the pinnacle of the format has been reached.

So it was trash once they started only bowling at Maxwell
Rashid, Mujeeb and Noor are bloody good bowlers in white ball cricket. Afghanistan didn't bowl thrash for the most part.

We can argue that the bowlers panicked and started bowling loose stuff at some point, but that only happened coz Maxwell kept attacking them relentlessly and put the pressure back on them.

I can't see how it can't be viewed as anything other than number 1 tbh. He could barely walk for his last 80 runs
Is it the best ODI knock? That's subjective coz there are plenty of knocks right up there, most of which were played before ODIs were totally skewed in favour of the batsmen. You can definitely make an argument for Maxi's knock though.

Viv's 189 is the best ODI innings that I've ever seen. It was a combination of pure stroke play and brutal hitting.

It was also against a good England attack and I don't believe any other player I've seen could have played that innings at that time.

But it wasn't in a WC which does devalue it when comparing it Maxwell's knock.

Thinking about this since last night, only Viv Richards' 189 and Kapil Dev's 175 come close in terms of percentage of runs scored and singlehanded nature of the effort. Maxwell doing it while chasing might just edge other contenders. Highest score while chasing is quite an achievement.

Whatever it takes!!!
Its easily the best ODI innings I have seen. And when people like Sachin and so many others around the world reckon its the best, then you gotta go with that.

I suppose those who saw the 175 by Kapil and the situation and the fact that it was a record score then should mean something. But its definitely in that tier and IMHO, it should be the best coz he was also battling his own fitness issues which adds another dimension to the hardships that were faced by Kapil, for instance.

I also kinda want this to be considered the best coz in a way I feel it also gives due recognition to how good Afghanistan have been, esp. their bowling.

I think the cramps are what easily put it above his peers. He nearly had to retire hurt twice. G Smith batting with broken arm, McCosker with broken jaw, S Smith after concussion in ashes

Cricket remembers these situations, except it's normally just the bravery that's praised, they don't usually get many runs in those situations. Maxwell's injuries randomly made him go super Saiyan

Even without cramps (which make it more memorable) this could be greatest knock ever. Double hundred in a chase is maniacal.

EDIT: also the highest ever score by a non-opener. He wasn't even #3, but #6.
Kapil had that going for his at the time it was scored too I imagine, and at #7

Afghanistan bowled some real brainless rubbish and he had a bunch of seriously lucky escapes early in the innings. It might be the biggest choke I've ever seen tbh... They just lost their heads completely.

And yet its still the greatest innings of all time. It's the kind of knock you mentally construct in your head as a kid when playing gully cricket in a "wouldn't that be awesome" kind of way . "Yeah we need 200 to get with only tailenders to come, what if I just score all 200 of them". Viv and Kapil can take a hike tbh.
