Deliberately losing a match

Is it OK to deliberately lose a WC qualifying match ?

Interesting response

I posed this question to some buddies.

One had an interesting take.
He said it's no different from the fielding side deliberately mis-fielding strategically to :
- allow a single off a good batsman so as to expose the weak batsman.
- Or to effect a run-out
- Or as C.Lloyd did to Brearley and Boycott WC final since they were plodding slowly

WI, by resting their two best players against India, are deliberately losing a match right now. Or at least it seems that way from the outside.

I can see why they would do that - if it is really to deliberately loose the match.

However - I still feel it's wrong if for no other reason but ethics (which doen't appear to be a valid reason for anything any more ... )

Or perhaps they both have niggles that the WI management don't want to risk aggrivating.

Or they want to test out the squad depth.

They had plenty of time to test out the squad depth, but I know Gayle wasn't 100% against England.

It's hardly "deliberately losing" though. They'll probably get more out of the players that are trying to break into the team in a game like this anyway.

Of course no team is going to deliberately lose. Taking the word a bit too literally. We aren't saying that they are going out there and hoping not to take wickets or get runs.

Just like in sports where ending up lower down the ladder/table results in better draft picks, there are examples of teams selecting their lineup whereby if they win, great, but if they lose, also great.

You don't bring in someone on ODI debut if you are going at full throttle to win.

I don't have a problem with what the Windies are doing, myself. It's effectively a dead rubber for them and, tbh, they're making a pretty decent fist of it so far.

Reckon India would've played Sehwag if it was a KO too.

Neither team is throwing the game, they are rightly resting key players in a match where the immediate outcome is not so important. For the composition of a side though, mentally actually throwing a game is very dangerous in the long run.

I've just moved this to CC to continue the discussion, further to this: Tottenham Hotspur fear fixture change may benefit Manchester City | Football | The Guardian

Basically, the winners of the FA Cup qualify for the Europa League, but if they're already in the Champions League then the runners-up in the FA Cup take their place in the Europa League instead.

Stoke City play Man City in the league AFTER the FA Cup final - therefore there could be a situation where Man City needed to win to secure 4th spot, having earlier beaten Stoke to win the FA Cup. In that instance then Stoke (if safe from relegation) could lose on purpose knowing if they did then they would qualify for Europe.

Thoughts?

If you were Stoke you would be crazy not to throw that game (provided they didn't win the FA Cup).

How much money is it per Prem place these days?

European football is nice and all but the Europe League is not so glamorous these days though if I was a Stoke fan I'd be desperate to be there. The fact is though, that the bottom half of the Prem is tight, 3 points could be worth a few places. It was half a million ten years ago for each place so I'm gonna estimate 75+k. A win over City could be worth a couple of million to Stoke, haven't got a tavle to hand but let's say its the difference between 11th and 14th....2.25 million

They'd have to go a long way in Europe to match that and even then I'm not sure they would. Go for the win.

City will beat them anyway though, tbh.
