Trott outscored Bell narrowly over the course of his career (ignoring the brief 2015 recall), but Bell had more hundreds and a better average.

You could also argue Bell succeeded in harder conditions considering the 2013 summer when he was a level above every other batsman on both sides, and before that the two had mostly succeeded and failed in the same series.

The number 3 thing does loom large in the memory though. It felt like Trott was finally the answer to a problem that plagued England for years.

Simon Jones instead of Woakes my only change from Pothas. Or maybe Tremlett?

For New Zealand I'm no expert but I feel McCullum has to be there , like his contribution to the NZ side is way too massive ..

I would say -

1.McCullum (C)
2.Conway
3.Williamson
4.Taylor
5.Mitchell
6.Blundell
7.Watling (WK)
8.Southee
9.Wagner
10.Bond
11.Boult
McCullum's an interesting case.

He's one of the best keepers (but behind Watling and perhaps Blundell).

He's one of the better openers (but behind Richardson, Conway, and Latham).

His best chance would be at 5/6 as a specialist bat (against Ryder, Mitchell, and Nicholls).

Also with 5 quicks (Bond/Southee/Boult/Wagner/Jamieson) going into 4 spots, there is no space for a spinner or allrounder (tough on Oram and De Grandhomme).

D Mitchell
McCullum
Watling(wkt)

Boult
Wagner

It's too early to include Blundell in these lists. Mitchell also can't be picked ahead of BMac but otherwise if no options, a case can be made.

Yep all good points , I just feel Brendon McCullum has made such a big contribution to NZ cricket that he cannot be ignored for anyone whose played less than 50 or 60 tests unless we are talking about a super elite player ..

●I mean as it stands bar Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum is the most capped Test player of the 2000's with 101 Test Matches

●Only Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor has scored more runs in the 2000's than McCullum

●He's the holder of New Zealand's highest ever Test Score - 302 vs India

●The fastest Test hundred by any player in Test Cricket is held by Brendon McCullum ,

●He's clearly a selfless cricketer as he's done a load of jobs ..
He's kept wicket , he's opened the batting , he's fielded in the slips , he's captained New Zealand , his style of batsmanship is clearly to play for the win I mean he has the second most sixes ever in Test Cricket ever only recently broken by Ben Stokes .

●As a non wicketkeeper he averages 42.94 with the bat from 49 tests ,
As a Test Captain in 30 Tests he averages 46.68 with the bat , with 6 Test hundreds which is the same number of tons Sir Viv Richards managed in 50 odd tests captaining West Indies, more tons captaining than Gower, Miandad , Cowdrey. Ganguly , Jayasuriya etc

Superb servant of New Zealand cricket 🏏

Agree. Bracken instead of Harris though, and perhaps go Smith-Clarke-Symonds-Hussey.

Unless it was a turner I'd also be tempted to pick Maxwell instead of Zampa to get great fielding and finishing power.
