Dear Diary 21st July < going by the dates of games

I am really excited about this, as a young gun i only dreamed of playing professional football. I had only ever played for a local club in Brisbane's first divsion and almost thought I wouldnt get any further than that. Then the call up came, a small second division English team, i was so excited for this oppurtunity, finally i could get some recognition among the big names, mind you it would be still alot of hard work.

There was still alot of time to get ready, over two months to get to the small English club for the officially signing. I left everything i owned to my parents, so they could sell it off gradually, went out and got Umbro and Asics sponroships, bought myself some first class gear, and flew out within two weeks... My girlfriend was obviously heart broken, however very understanding and said she would join me in four weeks.

the day of the official signing was beyond my belief, but everything from then till a couple of days ago have gone very quickly...

18th of July saw Webbers United FC's first game against Solothurn. Coming into the game, i wasnt really sure what to expect, then to find i will be starting on the bench, i was starting to think it would be one of those games.

It felt good to put on my new number 19 Webbers Utd FC Home jersey, finally something different than the old Purple and Gold of The Gap Pastime Club. But sitting on the bench i was feeling a little disapointed, with not a strong crowd, our team a very new club and the Solothrun finsihing a miserable 15th on the ladder. From kickoff, we were walking all over them, the only possession they could get was off alot of our bad balls, but every time we got the ball we looked somewhat dangerous up front. Getting 20 shots away on goal in the first half...with a dissapointing 7 shots on target. 4 goals from the first half with Tarick Weber bagging three of them.

After half time, it was my time to shine, with massive Tarick boats to fill up front. With our kickoff, it only took 4 minutes for us to find the net again...
this time a wonderful strike from 20 yards out by Paid the Umpire, it had to be one of the best strikes i have seen in a long time...i started to feel a bit better about my own game. My first touch was improving and generally everything about my game was top notch... except my ability to find the net, all my strikes on goal were straight at the keeper...

Another goal by Robertinho in the 56, and we were well on our way t our first victory, but moving into the final 10 minutes of the game, and i flet like i wouldnt be able to find the net this game... 84th minute in, and just outside the 18 yard box, i took a dig at goal, only to find the rear end of one of the defenders and watch the ball roll out for a corner... The ball was delivered in perfectly to the penalty, i had been working on my heading alot and this is where it paid off, i connected with it with prefection and watched it sail past the keeper.

My first goal of the season, in my first match, at a new club in England, i was having the best year of my life. Off the kickoff we got a quick tackle and showed what proved to be some great football, passing was suberb, and the finishing by Andrew Garven was even better... 8-0 and thats where i thought it would finish, but in late in injury time saw Rob almost snatch his second but quick thinking and some great goalkeeping from Solothurn saw a fingertip save defected off the post for me to put in the easy goal i have ever scored, to leave the final score at 9-0. I was on a high, two goals in the one match...if i was ever going to make a premiership title, this was definately the place to start

Next match saw me start on the bench again, but on such a hgih from the last match i didnt care...

with marc scoring in the 3rd minute of the match i was pretty sure this was going to be another walkover. And surely enough it was... the only resistance was a qucik goal to Dave Gruter putting it nicely past Tom in the 54th minute but two quick goals, certainly shut the opposition out of the game...

I was on a high 4 goals in two matches, i knew i had made the right decision and i was in awesome form and so were the other players, the whole team was working together and everyone was very friendly...some more than others....

James Stedman, my old mate from The Gap Pastime Cub, had join with Webbers Utd Fc and had a screamer of a game, winning every tackle and very header and completing 23 out of 28 passes...

tomorrow is our last friendly before kicking off into some real games. Have trainingin the morning, plus a 30km run to comlete...there is still alot of work to be done...

22nd July 2005

This was the morning of our last friendly before the real league starts, but before that was two weeks of training before the team's first league game against Yeovil. In those two weeks, we were gonna be put under a tight training regime that was going to be hard work, with everyone wanting a spot in the run on 11.

Awaking early, I went for a 30km run to improve my fitness. After that, i traveled to the brand new Training facilities. It was nervous times, everyone knew that their game had to be at their best. We started out with a few training drills, for the strikers we set into some on-target shooting, due to some way-ward shooting from everyone. Also, some finishing drills, and ending with some general skill drills. after two hours of training and my 30km run in the morning tired and with no afternoon training session with our game kicking off at 5:30pm, i went home to sleep, instead of going out with the team for a healthy lunch...
The team had been posted, at the end of the training session and to no surprise i was starting in a game, I think past form had a helping hand...

I proudly ran onto the pitch in the starting 11 for the first time and once again we were off to a good start, and quickly found the net for the first time, 8 minutes in and we were one up... our captain Bugssy put in a fine effort from range to only find the outside of the upright, but some great work on the wing to regain possession and put in a low cross to the near post, and a great touch by our captain to find the net again.

Gaurav Nayak was having a fine performance, putting in another two goals before the end of the half. My game however wasn’t at its best. I was surprised to then find that I wasn’t going to be subbed at half time. Only one second half goal to Paid the umpire, from the spot. I only managed 3 shots and only one on target. I am not sure what it was, pressure to perform or over confidence from the last two games. Whatever it is I better quickly lose it because it could affect my position in the side. The end score 5-1 to us, a great way to finish the friendlies off. The whole team on high, three wins, 19 goals scored and 2 conceded

The Leading goal scorer ladder looked like this:
Ben Fox: 4
Gaurav Nayak: 3
Tarick Weber: 3
Bugssy: 2
Marc: 2
Andy: 2
Paid Umpire: 1
Rob: 1

Three wins under our belt, a few minor injuries to begin the season, our team was in great shape heading into the league. However, before that, 2 weeks of training at our new centre. However this time will not only be training but team bonding, with the whole team moving into accommodation near the facilities for the next two weeks. Living together for the next two weeks, this should be interesting….

Dear Diary,
I feel uncomfortable in the showers after games because I know that Marc is watching. Always. Lucky for me he seems to have taken a liking to Tarick, so he's the one who gets the lovey dovey notes on the locker, not me.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Diary,

I overheard Rob telling Nick that Marc is "too talented". He seemed to be suggesting that he's lazy, arrogant and overcasual. I also noticed Rob breaking the locker room eye contact rule.

Dear Diary,

I'm worried about Liam. He's been hitting the grass (and by grass I do mean weed) pretty hard recently, and I've heard people calling him "Smokey". He's also convinced he once hooked up with a girl that looked like Burpey.

Dear Diary,

Ever since that locker room incident, I think Rob has been intimidated by the "size of my boat", though I've heard Burpey try to convince him that it's the "motion of the ocean" which really scores big with the ladies. On a related note, there's been a rumour that I had relations with Burpey's cousin. Totally untrue.

PS - I need to buy some new trainers. I can't seem to stay on my feet with these.

Dear Diary,

I have to say that I haven't had the best of starts at the club, with not much gametime at all. Hopefully there'll be a few more opportunities in the future, though with the way the boys are going I don't think the side will be chnaged much.

However, I'm having a ball off the field. A good time is always had on the training paddock. A few good nightspots around the place as well. There have indeed been rumours of my cousin Jeremy hooking up with Liam. Quite personally I never thought Jeremy swung that way, though Liam has always been a bit suspect.

That's all for now,
Stephen Burke

Dear Diary,

Burpey broke the locker room eye contact rule too. Luckily, he had Rob there to comfort him.

dear diary,

can not believe i am in england playing proffesional football. all the guys we have in this side are really cool blokes and most of us have gotten on well. there are a few dramas in the showers but i am sure we will get over that. have played ok football and have been given the joint captaincy which i am happy to take. we have a quality side with us playing well in our friendlys, we just got given a couple more friendlies before the season opener and we are looking to really dominate with defence as we now we can score goals.

the weather is ok a little cold so far but i will get over it.

talk to ya soon buddy.

Dear Diary 6th August

Today was our first legue match, and everyone worked hard to make the team, and today we would find out whether or not we had worked hard enough, or at least made it look like we did. I thought i was a shoe-in after scoring 9 goals in the preseason friendlies, and sure enough there was my name sitting in as a striker...

i didnt have a spectacular match though, i believe it was some complacency creeping into my game...my run was going way too well, but that wasnt concerning me...

we all new that this game was going to be hard fought, and it was, but that didnt stop Marc finding the top corner in the 8th minute...our team has a knack for that. It was a splendid shot and a well deserved goal, something that he would have been practicing for ages on that one...

we didnt score again that half and what happened was some tight, really enjoyable to watch soccer. We came out after half time with our managers words under our belt.

After kicking off in the second half, our dominance wasnt as over powering in the first half with alot of incomplete passing and crosses, but one thing did matter and that was our defence...they were taking to the opposition, shutting down anything Yeovil strikers were throwing at them and then clearing the ball up the field for a chance at a counter attack. Usually then lost very quickly by the forwards who were lacking the support by the midfields, they were running, practically from one end to the other...i dont blame them...
Once agian i was able to slot away another goal i thr 59th minute with a wonderful through ball from our captain....

THis was probably the best way to start our career as a small English club, but we all now know how tough this is going to be.

On the plane back, everyone practically slept, James somehow managed to get a hold of about 10 cans of coke and then tried to get numbers and emails of every hostess on the plane....When asked to comment, he just replied, "i am a ladies man, they all need some lovin' in this lonely job," when asked about how many numbers he had actually received, he quietly excused himself to the bathroom....

By the way the locker room eye contact rule has now gotten too far out of hand....the sad thing is though, that Rob seems to be enjoying it too much for a guy....a well as long as he doesnt try to play tug-of-war, like he tried on Burpey the other day, with mine then i am fine.

thats it for now....

Dear Diary,

After 21 years of dreaming of this moment, there were many times that i thought it would never happen. But last night i realised a dream and made my professional football debut when i started aganist Yeovil. To start the game made it even more special and to be the first Sri Lankan born footballer to play professional football in European is something amazing as well. But these things are something i will have to look back on at the end of my career, as i know i have a lot hard work ahead of me.

We have a great defence that has hardly been broken during the pre season games. There is a lot of pressure from the guys on the bench and in the reserves squad for our places. And i know that Nathan Hoy, who came on for me at the during the 2nd half, is pushing hard for my spot at right back.

There is a great team atmosphere around the dressing room and everyone seems to be getting along with each other really. There is one thing though that i have i find a bit wierd, the continue breaking of the locker room eye contact rule by the lighter coloured players in the team. Some players can't seem to keep there eyes above the waist line. I guess sooner or later the Kerry O'Keefe.

Dear Diary:

Finally im a professional footballer !
I get payed very well, me and Neil Pickup were planning to buy New Zealand as soon as we can, we reckon it will take 2 weeks.
the season started well for us, we played really well, i scored 5 already, very happy with that, although lately my form isnt that good, hope it can get better.
Also Marc is breaking the lockerroom rule over and over again really annoying, Rob seems to enjoy it though, he always gives it a little extra attention it seems..
we just had the season opener and I was on the bench, came in and didnt play that well, only a 6 the rating say, hope i can score one in the 2nd match(if im playing that is)
Bugs malone is a awesome trainer, were all learning a lot.
the team morale is pretty high atm, although some lads are very dissapointed that they can't leave to the big clubs.
Bugs's Malone's son has the most attention, awesome keeper, but still very young, and it seems that he attracts attentsion from all the big clubs, but he doesnt want to go it seems, good on him !
right, i got to go to training dear diary cya later

hey diary just a couple of things,

first i am so happy to be over here playing football with this talented bunch. we are playing really good football and at this early stage are sitting on top with 4 wins from 4 games, the rotation is good as it gives ya a rest and there is 4 of us sharing the captaincy so its good, but i wish i had more goals, although i have not played in all 4 games so my form is pretty good. the boys are all getting along really well but some of the boys rae too well with the shower thingy thats going on. The staff are great and how good is it to play at home infront of 20000 people. i can not wait till we get to the english premier league, infront of 40 - 50k fans, but that will be a couple of years but we are really trying to get there as soon as possible. we have the team so i think we can definately do it. Rob malone our manager is brilliant and is teaching us all the finer things so we should go well if we continue to do what he says, and not let it all get to our heads.......Our chairman and our sponsor has stated if we go through and win the 2 trophies this year they will provide us with any car we want as a bonus for such a good year.

the road trips are hard but enjoyable as long as you win, and you get to gee up the opposition fans and they hate it hahaha

well diary i have 3 goals to my name and hopefully by the next entry i have added a few more.. i was speaking to the manager and the chairman and he said that we are having a big awards night at the end of the season with a heap of awards so that will be good to look forward to. a nice big function to end the season and get us ready for the up coming season, so diary chat soon buddy oh and

Well 4 games into the league and we are leading the table....
We have huge potential to win this and that would be a great feat for the club, and must be some kind a record. well a little off my game since scoring that hat-trick, but hoepfully i will get some more game time and just keep on improving. We have finally settled into a routine in concerns with training, but i shower icident is now starting to get a little over the top, but it is still something to laugh about after a miserable cold day in England.

I think the whole team is improving, with some players even getting an interantional call-up with some others getting some big checks knocking on our door. However, Rob Malone, i think, has strong intentions on keeping the team together. Our goals have been coming quickly this season, recording some big wins, but we have worked hard to get our goals. Some of them have been absolute screamers and should be said that these goals, could be the best goals ever scored. I wonder who will score the best goal this season, my bet would be on Tarick Weber, he just has a natural ability to find the top right corner of the net.

Our sponsors have agreed to give us a car if we win the cups this season or something like that, that should be great, but a car backed by Adidas, well i dont know about that....

Anyway, it is great to be finally playing the best football of my life, cant wait to see how this one turns out.

I am currently going for Leading Goal Scorer out of our squad, hope i get it. Also, i managed to make League One Best 11 of the Week. Wasnt that exciting for me...to be honest i never thought my game was that good...

ah well thats all for now
