With the tie already decided, some of the lesser lights of the two teams turned out for an entertaining day's action. In the first match, Spas Delev survived a spirited display from Martin Reiter to beat the Austrian No. 1 in three sets. After cruising through the first set to love, Delev held 4 match points in the second set tiebreaker. Amazingly, Reiter saved all four and then took the breaker 8-6 in impressive style. The Austrian broke again early in the second, but that was all she wrote as Delev showed impressive poise to recover for a three set win.

It was left to Roy Daniels to complete the sweep, and against Heinz Hainsch he looked good early. Having taken the first set 7-5, Daniels held three break points at 4-4 in the second but blew his chance at serving out the match. Hainisch produced a smash-and-grab effort to take the tiebreaker to one, and then eased through the Easterner in the third to complete a three-set win.

West CWLand vs. Denmark​

Just like their rivals to the East, West CWLand had two dead rubbers on the Stedingham clay to get through with the two highest ranked players in the tie nevertheless having a best-of-three set match. Handing the home side a 4-0 lead Sven Oxenstierna overcame a quick-starting Rasmus Olesen to take a victory in straight sets.

The one-time Grand Slam finalist fell to a 0-4 lead, and was serving at 0-30 before staging an impressive recovery. He drew clawed back to 5-4 before Olesen could win another game, and then broke for the third time in the set for a 7-5 lead. That broke Olesen's resolve as he went 0-3 in a dismal weekend's display; Oxenstierna taking a win 7-5, 6-2.

Having played two matches already, Jojo Mustard took a rest as World No. 80 and French Open quarter finalist Brett Read played World No. 428 Jesper Overgaard. The West CWLander expected a dominant victory, but was stunned in the second set as Overgaard broke serve twice to take the set 6-3. That was all he produced, though, as Read recovered well from the second set shock to shut him out of the third to secure the 5-0 whitewash in three sets.

BRAZIL vs.

CHINA @ BRAZIL
The Chinese had it easy through Asian qualifying with a 4-1 win over Korea Republic and a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan over the weekend. With Zhijun Sun the highest ranked player in the tie, they look to meet the Brazilians on a court that is a certainty to be clay. Brazil are coming off a 3-2 win over Peru where their No. 1 Roberto Santos did not drop a set in the singles rubbers.

SPAIN vs.

UKRAINE @ SPAIN
With Illya Altman an exclusion, Ukraine did amazingly well to upset the Germans in Kiev 3-2. Viktor Vuriak was the star of the show with straight sets wins over Gunther Heug and Becker Haas, while Roman Dorogan set up the win with a first day upset of Haas. Even with Altman back, facing the mighty Spain in Spain and on clay is something they won't be fancied in.

BELGIUM vs.

ITALY @ BELGIUM
The Belgians were knocked out in the first round of the World Group by Russia 2-3, but the get the chance to host another tie against the imposing Italian outfit. Italy won 4-1 against the Netherlands with Carlo Amato impressive in wins over Thomas Velten and Mischa Pasveer (6-1, 6-0, 6-0 vs. Pasveer) to secure the victory. With a top quality doubles unit in the Bachunellis, they are going to be hard to stop.

ARGENTINA vs.

WEST CWLAND @ ARGENTINA
For the second year running Argentina were bundled out in the first round of the World Group - this time by Serbia - and look to keep their World Group hopes alive against the West CWLand outfit. The West won their tie against Denmark 5-0, but need to win this away from home in front of a hostile Argentinian crowd to move into the World Group. Juan Moreno will probably be back to lead the Argies, but the West look very, very good. Last season Argentina won their play-off match 4-1 against Australia at home.

AUSTRALIA vs.

CZECH REPUBLIC @ AUSTRALIA
It wasn't convincing for the most part, but Australia managed to escape with a 4-1 win over Thailand away from home to book a showdown with the Czechs. It will be an interesting choice of surface - the Czech No. 1 Radek Spidla is a clay court novice, really, but David Champion isn't a whole lot better. The Czechs were bettered by the Croatians on clay in March 1-4, so it might tempt the Aussies to pick the red stuff.

CHILE vs.

ROMANIA @ CHILE
Chile were thumped by the Swiss in March while Romania ate a 1-4 loss against the USA. They meet in Chile and on clay in the least inspiring of the fixtures.

HUNGARY vs.

GREAT BRITAIN @ HUNGARY
Coming up from Zone II last season, Hungary are almost unbackable favourites to beat the British (injuries permitting) in Hungary and on the clay most likely. They beat the French 3-1 before Jean-Christophe Genghini added some respectability to the scoreline. The Brits were done in by Austria 1-4 at home back in March, and with only Henry Charles flying the flag they are in some trouble.

CANADA vs.

JAPAN @ CANADA
The Canadians pulled a great escape act against Colombia as they won both ties on the last day to snatch a 3-2 victory. Davis Kennedy was particularly impressive with wins over Johan Ortiz and Diego Hurtado, while Michel Paquette proved a capable understudy with a straight sets win over Ortiz to snatch the victory. Japan managed just one point against Sweden, and probably lack the star quality that Kennedy brings to Canada.
