David Warner retirement thread

Yeah I don't get the standard by which a lot of folks seem to feel for Smith and Bancroft in their pressers but feel Warner is being truly insidious out of all of them.

I'll say this, no one should doubt how upset he is given what his wife and the family have likely gone through on the tour. I know Warner has reaped what he's sowed, but Quinton really opened a Pandora's box with whatever comment he made. In fact I know I've been hard on him as much as anyone else here, but at least I can believe (albeit who knows apart from him) that Warner was probably behaving truly irrationally in his seething frustrations in fostering that dumb plan.

Edit: I should add I don't really blame Quinton for what the public did, nor his choice to absolutely backhand David after being apparently bombarded by him with comments that cross CA's line on sledging for two hours prior.

Wasn’t it Kusal Perera

Who has since turned down the offer

It’s hilariously beautiful to me that they dropped Warner to gain the moral high ground and then picked Kusal, who was also banned for taking an illegal substance
was it ever proven? stop making ridiculous comments.

His suspensions co-incided just beofre the start of the 2016 World Twenty 20.

That was an attempt to marginalize the defending champions' chances in 2016

Yesssssss

Someone with the balls to say what they think regardless of how stupid it sounds. The world needs more of this.

Only that the ICC later expressed an apology and indicated that this could've been due to a procedural lapse.

ICC chief executive David Richardson said the governing body was "troubled" by the case.

He added: "We wish to make it clear that there is no evidence that Mr Perera has ever used performance-enhancing substances and we wish him well in his future cricketing endeavours."

"Had it not been for the diligence of Mr Perera's legal team and the ICC's own desire to uncover the explanation for the reported findings, the consequences could well have been different, and that should be of concern to all involved in the fight against doping.

"We regret what Mr Perera has had to endure, and would like to commend him for the manner in which he has conducted himself throughout this period."

> Ugly look isn't it

I'm certain that this is merely idle speculation at this point.

Though it is probably true that a lot of journalists are running after him with all kinds of inducements to try and get him to bite.
Don't think he will, unless he is convinced that CA has decided to finish him off.

Yeah the media is clearly on the lookout for anything Warner-related, so worth taking stuff with caution unless it's confirmed. It's not implausible though.

Warner is exactly the type that would push his mother over a bridge to get the sweet dough of a tell-all interview with trash like A Current Affair or something. This doesn't surprise me at all.

I hope he appeals and gets 6 months, even if they don’t pick him to play for Aus. Would make Smith looks like a goose.

Fmd when did we get from 'cheating bully who loves sledging' to painting a picture of him like some sort of evil money loving devil

I reckon Smith and Warner will have cashflow problems in the short term. Losing 5 mil all of a sudden could cause all sorts of issues.

They will want to find money to cover debts, even potentially getting desperate aka interviews for sale.

Entirely possible if they've got big liabilities. I imagine they'll have some liquid assets and be able to secure more debt easily if necessary.

Smith should easily be able to get access to a credit line.

Warner, maybe not that much (depends on his net worth situation).

As if any of us would turn down a million ****ing dollars just to talk to a presumably sympathetic journo under controlled conditions for an hour.

:D loving how the discussion has gone into speculation of the players' personal finances now. And yet we blame the tabloids and press for such stuff. The irony.

I don't think appeals were tenable. if anything an appeal would've amounted to challenging the basic premise of cheating, which would only make the way back even tougher, considering the (unnecessary) bad blood due to the appeal process within.

Overall i think it was sensible of Smith and Bancroft to accept their punishments and move. They screwed up. They admitted they screwed up. And they punished for their screw-up. I think Warner might be purposefully playing it down to amp up speculations and thereby get himself some high priced TV time (and equally might be not as well), but in the end he will do well to do what Smith and Bancroft did. All this assuming that he want to play for Aus again. If not its a different matter altogether.

Popcorn time.
