Darren Gough retires from test cricket

Sangrah, absolutely brilliant! I thought you were joking when you put Chapple in there, i guess the ECB have reached new depths and i no longer take them seriously...

My pick would have been Saggers

Saggers will become a "Bicknell" Awesome on the county scene, and never get a chance for some reason.. conspiracy is being chatted about at my club

My 4077th post (M.A.S.H. fan here)

The ECB are doing it by the book.

It's a new one called 'International Team Selection For Dummies'

lol, thanks guys.

The ECB have always been one for strange selections, and Chapple's is no exeption, despite being a good player and being named Lancashire's Player Of The Year on a few occasions.

the england cricket board are idiots. i can see the headline now, "Robert Key Announced England Skipper." By the way, how many times was Key dismissed by part timers in Australia?

Of memoray, about three times (one to Martyn and two to Steve Waugh).

I wonder if the ECB are reading this? They are more then welcome to post and explain their "reasoning".

They wanted to make up some ground on the West Indies in the "How many people can you make choke upon their breakfasts whilst reading the team selection" competition..

27 wickets at 37 from 10 matches this season though doesn't exactly suggest he should be in the England team.
Yet Geoff Miller says he's been in good form

I'd have said it was between Martin Saggers and Kabir Ali for mine. They must have tossed a coin heads for Saggers, tails for Kabir, and it landed on its side...
Saggers won't play for England ever - been into this one before!

Johnson should've been in there IMO.

Mind you, I named 8 pace bowlers as possible replacements, and not one of them was Glenn Chapple!

Sad to see a great player go. This was in a way expected, and i think this may be another way of having a let off for harmison, anderson and flintoff. one of them would have been dropped, but now goughs gone, i'm not sure.
The selectors will never drop Harmison, unless Jones comes back. Looking at Harmison's career and series figures and you see how safe his position is even when it shouldn't be.

Let's not have this thread descend into Anderson v Harmison like all the others seem to at the moment - because in the first two tests, they've managed one good 5-over spell between the pair of them.

True, but Marc's suggestion that Harmison has bowled better is in my opinion incorrect, he's bowled as much rubbish as the rest of them. Neither have impressed but I'd much rather have Anderson in my team than Harmison any day.

why don't we have a marc v rik thread? only marc and rik are allowed and they can argue as much as they want.:D

Lol. Then we can open another thread where we bet on who will win each round of the argument...

Back to Chapple, read his quote this morning:

"England have had a few injuries and, as I have scored some runs recently, I thought I might have a chance."

Yeah but you haven't taken any bloody wickets have you Chappers?!?!

Like I said, when you pick bowlers on the strength of their batting, you know you're in trouble!!

....unless it's warnie. that fella has played some beautiful knocks.
That makes little sense in the context because Warne is clearly not picked on the strength of his batting.
