Damien Martyn Retires !!!

State Vice-Captain
Of course Martyn's not a legend of the game - his record attests to that fact. But the thing is - who cares??? With Marto it wasn't about the record - I couldn't care less if he averaged 50 or 40 - it was just the joy in watching him bat. The legend status can be reserved for Ponting, Gilchrist etc - Marto can go down as the elegant enigma.

Its not really a crap record either. He's not going to go down with the Borders, Waughs, and Pontings of the world, but he will be remembered as a quality player who had some brilliant patches of form and was a key member of a great team - a status that his statistical record will confirm.

Marto is set to sell his story for $30 000.

It's a shame.

It takes away a bit of the mystery surrounding him.

I rather liked the elusive Marto; the resign by SMS Marto.

There was a 'coolness' to his elusiveness.

Yeah it ruins the intriguing nature of his retirement now.

Plus, apparently Alan Jones is his good mate, disgusting.

Oh come on, how much mystery is there going to be, really?

Dear Diary,

6am Woke up, had bowel movement.

6pm Had steak, mashed potatoes and peas for tea. Was feeling adventurous so smothered steak and vegies in Heinz ketchup instead of the old White Crow.

Thought about quitting, might do it. Punter, Pidge, Pup and Alfie are likely to give me grief, think I'll take a cruise and lie low for a month or two, the boys may have forgotten about it by then.

11pm Took another dump before bed, porked the missus. Had trouble sleeping, read Craddock's column in the Herald Sun.

Signing off,

Marto.

Alan Kippax
Archie Jackson
Stan McCabe

This is a bit of a dig, I suppose and a bit stale now....but I've heard from a reliable source that Martyn was quite peeved that Hussey was promoted in front of him on that fateful afternoon in Adelaide, and that there was indeed, as widely reported at the time, an incident in the dressing room afterwards. One thing is for sure, you can't trust Cricket Australia (CA) to set any record straight. They still haven't learnt from the Warne/Waugh affair.

For instance, where were all those thousands and thousands of aggrieved fans at the entry gates this summer, whose tickets CA assured the public they had cancelled, in their crackdown on scalping.

I'd hate to think Marto did get wound up by Hussey being promoted, because for me that would really take away from my view of Martyn as a player, I always thought he was a very calm kind of person, not just at the crease but off the field too. Like you said howard, it's unlikely that CA will actually confirm or deny this rumour though.

Indeed, Hayden doesn't come across as a confrontational guy in those sort of circumstances. I know he's a big lad who can get fired up on the pitch, but he has always been pretty quiet and well liked by his team-mates in all the articles I have read about him.
