That being said, Marshall, McGrath, Imran, Smith all have greater claims than Viv, especially the first 3.
Viv is greater than all of them.

The only one with a bigger claim to greatness the past 40 years is Sachin.

Botham > Tendulkar but also Viv > Imran is ludicrous but quintessentially English.
Imran is technically a better cricketer than Viv sure, but Viv in terms of greatness slightly ahead.

In an all time team Marshall is probably the first name that will be picked after Bradman & Sobers but his fame was not even close to Viv
I fully agree with the first part, he's the 3rd name on the sheet.

So from that perspective, I don't see where fame even comes into it.

Don't get me wrong, Viv also makes the list, but fame isn't going to be the reason why.

I'd think it would be Bradman, Sobers, Gilchrist then the rest. Then again, the purists seem to prefer Knott. Either way, i usually see those two firsthand second the Sachin and Warne.

You would choose your wicketkeeper before your no. 1 pacer?

Yes, there's a bigger gap between Gilly and Knott, but there are some who would prefer Knott.

In any event, even with the gap, I would take my opening bowler over the wicketkeeper bat, especially with Bradman and Garry being the first two picks.

I'd definitely rather swap Marshall or McGrath out for Hadlee than Gilchrist out for Knott. Yes opening the bowling is more important than keeping and batting seven, but there's a massive difference between Gilchrist and the next best WKB that just doesn't exist between the top few quicks.

I acknowledged that the gap is bigger. You're also factoring in what's more important though, imo.

That's also not even considering if, with the ridiculous line up of avengers this team has, if the better call isn't the best keeper.

And re quality, yes pigeon is close, but no one brings the combination that Marshal brings... Ability to swing it both ways, express pace, enforcer, home and away dominance, yeah. Yeah for me that's the 3rd name of the sheet with the argument for 2nd.

Not entirely true tbh. The gulf in batting quality between Gilchrist and Knott is similar to that between Imran and McGrath.
