At a stage when the more recent inductees and contenders have bowling averages > 30, I had hoped Appleyard might gain a vote or two based on 31 w @ 17.87 but perhaps only 9 Tests is too small a career.
However, I'm sticking with brief careers but jumping ship.
Bert Ironmonger only had 5 more Tests than Appleyard but took over double the wickets (74) at a very similar average (17.97).
He's my vote.
