CW's Ranking of Batsmen (Tests)

Smith getting completely ignored is unexpected. ( Grace, Ranji, Trumper and Barry Richards.. Too )
Yeah, I took the coward's way out with Grace by excluding him from consideration as judging the 19th Century blokes as Test players is fraught. Ranji might be excluded on that basis too - his Test career was relatively brief and all his best work was done in the 19th Century as well. Trumper I'll definitely pick, though he's top 20 for me rather than top 10.

And Barry Richards, well I'll probably have the same issues of how to rank him as a Test batsman as I am having in the All Time XI selections!

Steve Smith

I'm a little reticent to pick Smith as his career still has plenty (hopefully) to run, and there is always the possibility that his recent decline is terminal. But his 2014-2019 peak, including huge away series where runscoring wasn't easy, places him in the very top echelon for me.

I actually put Smith along side Lara and Tendulkar. But there are so many in CW who won’t vote for active players I knew he wouldn’t get votes and it would be a wasted vote.
That’s not to say that my three votes for Chappell haven’t been wasted. :tooth:

Smith should be no lower than 7th tbh, to out him at 10th seems misleading somehow. Think Headley belongs in the top 10 though.

No. I think the 9 selected so far is quite accurate and completely deserving of those places. So 10th looks right for Smith.

But you picked Sutcliffe. :p
Yes, the reason being personally I am not too sure how Smith will end up since it is apparently becoming quite difficult for him to pick up his 60+ averaging form again. But I will be content with him at 10th if everyone believes that he will become his old strong self again.

Otherwise, even Ricky Ponting and few other greats had such peaks that Smith had and then fell off a bit at the end and Smith`s career might be a similar one.

U19 12th Man
Headley - 7
Pollock - 2
Smith - 7
Sutcliffe - 2
Chappell - 1

Breaking the tie with Smith since he should have been in way earlier in my opinion. The guy averages nearly 70 batting at #3 and #4 in a pretty bowler friendly era. Assuming he's gonna move up a lot higher once he retires.

The List
1. Don Bradman
2. Jack Hobbs
3. Garry Sobers
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Viv Richards
6. Brian Lara
7. Len Hutton
8. Wally Hammond
9. Sunil Gavaskar
10. Steve Smith

The vote for the #11 test batsman of all-time begins now.
