CW Battrick Cup (season 13)

State Vice-Captain
Dammit! My poor run of form in the CW Cup continues. Good stuff from the Ponies, with Potgeiter's lethal medium pace winning the match.

This week's fixtures:

Code:
Group A: Leverock CC (6550) vs ASC Whenuapai (1569)
Group B: Coco's Nuts (6533) vs Jaffna Jets (2272)
Group C: Dee Crew (11217) vs Withington Wonderers (425)
Group D: Tawonga Tigers (4929) vs Central Districts (6385)
Again, home team challenges, challenge to be made by midnight on Wednesday (BT-England time).

I'll post the current standings and NRRs at lunchtime, unless someone else is far too keen and gets in there first!

Group A: Connells vs Whenuapai

A bit of a mismatch, as a weakened Connells side came up against a strong Nibbs outfit. Whenuapai racked up 349 for the loss of only two wickets, Sutton and Newby making centuries at over a run a ball.

In reply, Connells limped to 93ao, with only Adu (46no) holding his head high.

Whenuapai win, NRR +5.12

Group B: Jaffna vs Cymru

This time it was the home team (oops!) who put out a strong, almost 1st choice team, getting put in to bat and scoring 351/1, with centuries from openers Cramar (101) and Quintin (186no).

In reply, Staveley (113) and Noon (108) made the most of the sunshine, putting on 210 runs for the 3rd wicket, but they were always behind the RRR. Once those two fell in quick succession, the rest did a fine impression of the England middle order to fall 103 runs short of the target.

Jaffna win, NRR +2.06

Group C: Magical Ponies vs Withington

My woes continue! This time, a 1st XI Withington side scored too slowly and too collapsedly against a full-strength (I think) Ponies side.

Ponies chased 206 down without much fuss, making it to 207/3 with five full overs to spare.

Ponies win, NRR +0.48

Group D: Alternative XI vs Central Districts

On paper, this should have been a close match. Certainly, the sides put out included plenty of good players, with the match ratings looking pretty tasty for both sides.

Alternative XI's captain, Pete McIntosh, won the toss and decided to have a bat. In PCH conditions on a green pitch, his side made a competitive 275/7, Vincent (84) and King (82no) making most of the runs.

The crowd braced themselves for a stirring Central Districts fightback, but it was not to be, as that man McIntosh left their batting order in tatters, all out for just 50 runs.

Alternative win, NRR +4.50

At the halfway stage in our match Coco's Nuts have knocked up 285/5 against the Jaffna Jets. I'm pretty happy with that, even though I know The Jets aren't playing full-strength. Strydom continued a run of good form to hit 122 and Hutchinson chimed in with 73. The in-form Greene smashed 28 off 17 balls at the end to lift us to the total.

Will need a good bowling performance though and am hoping we can nip out a couple of their better players whose PFL's are a bit low to give us a chance.

Am predicting a Jet's victory in the 47th over. 4th ball

EDIT: We've picked up the somewhat fatigued dangerman Lucas and first drop Clayton in the first over to reduce them to 0/2

Can't see us getting back from here. Not much batting left. These two need to score 250 atleast.
They're ticking along nicely though, I'd like to pick up a wicket fairly soon. My last bowler isn't very good. And these two are getting smashed.

Group A: Leverock CC (6550) vs ASC Whenuapai (1569)

Against a strong Whenuapai side, Leverock went into this one as rank underdogs, their fans just hoping for a nice day in the sun watching a few stars.

Newby (116) and Flitney (126no) certainly didn't disappoint, taking Whenuapai to a huge 347/3.

It then took pacemen Gill (5/12) and Bowler (4/14) just over 12 overs to tear through Leverock's batting, all out for 31.

Whenuapai win, NRR +6.32

Group B: Coco's Nuts (6533) vs Jaffna Jets (2272)

This was expected by many to be the closest group in the competition, and Coco's Nuts have just blown it wide open!

Jaffna started well, putting Coco's in to bat on a greentop with menacing clouds overhead and then taking two early wickets. However, without Samaraseka, Muralitharan and the strangely-spelt bowling god that is Prsanna Jeithoon, wickie Strydom (122) took charge and got the home side to 285/5.

In reply, it was always close, with the two snakes on the match graph intertwining like a pair of primary coloured lovers. At 230/5 with a few overs left, a grandstand finish was on the cards...but it wasn't to be as that man Mabudafhasi all but ended Jaffna's hopes with three wickets in an over. 232ao, and now the former runners-up's hopes of progress lie outside their control.

Coco's Nuts win, NRR +1.06

Group C: Dee Crew (11217) vs Withington Wonderers (425)

Another mismatch, Withington fielded a mid-strength side against Dee Crew, who put themselves in to bat and managed a decent 158ao. While MOTM Gibb (6/19) was the pick of the bowlers, most of his wickets came during his second spell.

In reply, Withington's makeshift top order just weren't good enough, leaving Sandwith (79*) and Fish (41*) to knock off the runs and keep their hopes alive.

Withington win, NRR +2.92

Group D: Tawonga Tigers (4929) vs Central Districts (6385)

This tie could well have been an upset, with Tawonga Tigers fielding a strong team and hoping Central Districts rested some of their big guns.

However, that wasn't to be, with Tawonga's firepower just not enough, despite an Elite spin rating, to prevent the Central Districts batsmen from knocking off the required 208 runs in 42.3 overs.

Central Districts win, NRR +0.85
