CricketWeb Tennis - Season I

SirBloody Idiot

Cricketer Of The Year
Alavos, Heug, Morkel out of CW Open

Paraguay's Marcelo Alavos, Germany's Gunther Heug and Norway's Haiku Morkel have all announced their withdrawal from next week's CW Open through injury. Alavos, who recently returned from a broken finger, has withdrawn with a damaged shoulder that will almost certainly see him slide further outside the top 50. Meanwhile, the frustrating season of Morkel takes a turn for the worse as he withdraws with a badly sprained ankle. Gunther Heug meanwhile will be out of action for at least a month as he seeks surgery on his injured hip.

Meanwhile, world No. 2 Daniel Páez Blanco will test his injured ankle out in an exhibition match in pictuesque Langforth this Friday. Blanco, who was forced to withdraw from the Clowich Masters, remains in doubt for the final Grand Slam of the season, and will make a decision after his match with Australian David Champion in the riverside town. Langforth will play host to six matches between Wednesday and Friday as a warm up before the Open begins next Monday.

Would like one or two of the higher ranked players to volunteer for an exhibition match (best of three sets) in the latter part of the week. Mainly aimed at Drake, Oxenstierna, Smeltz or Hancianu considering the field includes Cowan, Varga, Henson, Bachunelli, Blanco, Moreno, etc. Could go with Maxum, too, if he's keen to test himself on hard courts against József Boros.

Yeah Maxum will play it :), be good to have some hardcourt against high class opposition leading in (best not get injured though)

Third round at a Masters tournament isn't something to sniff at. :p Davis would probably sacrifice you on court for a finish like that.

No excuse there. Must have some South African blood. :@
Couldn't have been scripted in a more perfect way, to be honest. :D Form is promising though, so a real chance to go deep and maybe reclaim a top five spot.

CW Open seeds announced

Australian Open champion and world No. 1 Jason Hall has been named the No. 1 seed for this year's CW Open after having lost the spot to Daniel Páez Blanco for the Wimbledon tournament in June. Hall is one of five Americans to earn a seeding at the final Grand Slam of the season, with Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan and Dwayne Murdoch also seeded inside the top sixteen.

Colombian Diego Hurtado's semifinal appearance at the Clowich Masters came at just the right time as he rose to 26th in the rankings; ousting Montréal semifinalist Antonio Bachunelli from the top 32.

Should second seed Blanco withdraw from the tournament after this Thursday's draw, he will be replaced by a lucky loser from qualifying.

Magrat Garlick

Rather Mad Witch
Press conference excerpts

Q: You talked up your chances before this game and you've had a number of fights with Radek in the press; was this your most gutting loss of your career?

SO: It probably feels like it now because it's so recent, but I've had a few - especially as top seed in the minor tournaments, losing to Isaev in the first round of Gstaad was just dismal, and although I tried my best it was also gutting to fail in the Team Cup. I'd rather not dwell on it. I try to take out the positives; this time I broke Radek twice and should have buried him, sooner or later I'll have the rub of the green towards the end of a match. I've beaten Hall in three sets so I know I can be up there in a decider.

Q: Were you happy with the crowd today? You've said previously that you didn't expect much support?

SO: Actually, I was pleasantly surprised; I know I haven't done all that much to endear myself to the crowds recently, but from what I've seen in the local media - especially down in the east, Fitzworthingham, Smithsville and Nixonstown - they've really cut into my performance and talked up the other guys like Mustard and Korpinen. I suppose that's their choice, but it's a little bit frustrating not being recognised as Webland's finest Slam player - losing in early matches in slams somehow doesn't matter. The crowds didn't seem to take that on board, though, they've been all for me since I beat Mustard and I even had lots of support in that game. So that's good to see ahead of the Open and the Davis Cup, I'm proud to fly the flag now.

Q: Do you regret the decision not to play in Pickford?

SO: I've seen a few disappointed reactions from fans; looking back I guess I regret playing all through February, but it was necessary for my ranking and I really did have a fantastic run in Acapulco, which prepared me well. I don't think I'll repeat that tour next year, though - I've shown I can play on hard courts and I'm booking in for a long CWLand leg of the PTA next year.

The downside is that I'm feeling the strain on my body from playing 60-odd games in a year, it's really something I think a lot of the top players can subscribe to - we needed to play a lot to defend our rankings and I think we can see some real surprises as the effects of that will ripple through towards the Open and during the autumn tournaments. I'm more bemused at Jeff [Drake]'s decision not to play though, given the field and surface he would have had to be a favourite, and he might have got a valuable practice match against Haas ahead of the Davis Cup.

Q: So you're not playing the exhibition in Langforth, either?

SO: I think that would be disingenuous. I don't really like exhibition tournaments, they're there to spin money for the best players rather than to the benefit of the tour as a whole. The tour is there to protect the interest of all players, and I think we should respect that and not create our own little circuit outside; that said, I can see the benefit for Daniel [Páez] in the situation he's in right now - he can see how that ankle looks against someone who can really test him without having to worry about the result of the match. Tournaments like the ones the Arabs are setting up outside the tour worry me, though.

Q: Do you think your serve let you down today?

SO: I would have to admit that. A double fault at 15-all and 5-4 is obviously not ideal. I fought my best in that game but Shpidla was fired up and fully deserved to break back - as I mentioned, he's really lifted his game since Wimbledon and I take some credit for dragging him to three sets. The way he's playing right now I think he might even be useful on clay - he's returning serve a lot better and cutting down on the unforced errors.

Q: How do you see CW's chances in the upcoming month?

SO: The Open should be interesting - our other players have perhaps been in better form earlier in the season, but Mustard, for example, ran into me so maybe he's better than a third round appearance would indicate. We have five seeded players, but at least two of them have done it on clay court exploits, and that shooting star, Heath, hasn't really come on as well as I predicted. Roy has struggled with injuries, too, which is a shame as he's a real good bloke - I think there are many seeds who quiver at the thought of getting him in the first round on centre court, I don't think there's anyone who will get more vocal support than him. I'm going to say that we'll get three players in the fourth round and two in the quarters, though, which any nation should be well pleased with.

As for the Davis Cup, we really should be in the World Group considering how many players we have in the top fifty, but we've been given a mighty tough draw - away again is a bit meh, the crowds back here are excellent and I really hope we get a home tie next year. A home quarter-final to open the season here would be magnificent. Günther Heug might come back, so hopefully we'll have all the top players there, that's always good for pulling crowds. The Germans are struggling a bit with their doubles pairing - Haas and Heug don't seem to like the format - so I think they might have to pick some specialists, and that might play into our hands because it's going to be tough playing two five-setters in three days straight after a Slam. We can rotate a bit more given that Drake is likely to play doubles. Then again, Heug won't struggle with jet lag if he does return. I really hope to play both singles matches; I think my 4-1 record for Webland in team matches, including wins over two of the world's top four players, speaks for itself.

Cricketer Of The Year
Pickford Cup
1st Round - Pickford (CWLand)

Men's Singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • CWLand's Spas Delev has begun the leadup to his CW Open campaign with a confidence-boosting victory over Umag semifinalist Adem Tadić. In his first match since a quarterfinal appearance in Washington, the wildcard seemed to be a little short on match practice as Tadić took the first two games comfortably. But with a modest crowd behind him, Delev struck back to draw level and in a tight opening set managed to stick with the Croat to head to a tiebreaker. There he turned it on and claimed the breaker 7-1 to head into the second with all momentum on his side. In a clinical display, Delev added to his two first set breaks with three in the second as the Croat imploded; Delev advancing to a tough second round clash with Ivan Genov 7-6(1), 6-0.
  • Picking up his first win of the season, Roy Daniels joined Delev in the second round with a tight straight sets win over veteran Li Ming-Wang. Daniels was embarrassed last week against Miroslav Brdar in Clowich, and the popular CWLander resolutely went out to avoid another embarrassment against the Chinese No. 3. Taking the first with a late service break, Daniels looked more free in his movement and served fluently to take the second to a tiebreaker. The breaker started poorly as he quickly fell behind 0-3, before storming back to secure a mighty tough second round clash with Morgan Carter 6-4, 7-6(4).
  • The week didn't begin as successfully for Scotland Rivers who meekly fell in straight sets to China's Zhenyu Fok in the worst possible conclusion to his Nixonstown preparation. The tall Chinese No. 4 dominated the match against the nervous Rivers who failed to get his best tennis flowing in the wake of some fantastic serving from Zhenyu. Whilst not the biggest serve on the tour, the Chinese player served at 76 per cent to have Rivers on the back foot for the most part; Rivers himself fired down eight double faults in a frustrating display which saw him struggle on service. In sixty-two minutes, Zhenyu set up a second round clash with the out-of-form Oneil Stewart 6-3, 6-2. Rivers, who has now exited first round two weeks in a row, will instead focus on his doubles campaign to complete his warmup ahead of his wildcard entry into the CW Open.
  • Elsewhere, Spain's Marc Carretero picked up his first victory on hard courts this season with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(7) win over Yordan Zakov. The world No. 84 was playing his first tournament of the season outside of the European clay courts - a place where he has received plaudits from players as well-respected as Daniel Páez Blanco. Elsewhere, 16-year old Harry Thompson bizzarely completed his second victory in as many days over Kim Roger Olsen of Norway. The two teenagers met in the final round of qualifying where Thompson comfortably won 6-0, 6-4, and Olsen replaced Thompson's scheduled opponent Aksu Emrem after his withdrawal through injury. The Australian prodigy, who enters his third Grand Slam tournament next week, picked up his second ATP level win 7-5, 6-2.

  • Seeded players out: None.
IPP Trophy
1st Round - Geneva (Switzerland)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Doubles)

  • In Geneva, Matt Bre started his tournament off with a solid win over local Christian Bruns. Not noted for his clay court tennis, Bre entered the Geneva draw because I wasn't running another tournament in ****ing Uzbekistan of all places to add some more experience on other surfaces. In a confident display, Bre took the first set in a tiebreaker and showed great composure to run away with the match in the second set to advance 7-6(6), 6-2. It gets tougher from here, though, as Carlos Gonzá awaits in the second round. Gonzá produced some brilliant tennis to smack Romania's Radu Ghitá 6-1, 6-1.
  • In the day's biggest upset, third seed Fernando Aguero was shockingly beaten by world No. 532 Marcel Kurz 6-3, 5-7, 2-6.

  • Seeded players out: Fernando Aguero.

Cricketer Of The Year
CW Open
Days 1 & 2 - Nixonstown (CWLand)

  • Among the winners in the first round of qualifying was local wildcard David Briggs who produced a come-from-behind victory to defeat Australian Robert Franklin. The talented 20-year old dropped the first set to the experienced Aussie, but fought well to break late in the second set to head to a decider. There the CWLander produced his best tennis of the match to seal a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win. He now faces French 25th seed Christian Mary who easily accounted for South Africa's Matthew Oertel 7-6(1), 6-1.
  • Also victorious was Randy Banks who prevailed in style by crushing fellow CWLander Caresh Mahboob in straight sets. Banks seemed to take confidence from his second round appearance in the doubles draw of the Clowich Masters, and completed a victory inside of an hour 6-0, 6-4. His draw is tough, though, with second round opponent Petr Brozik winning 7-5, 6-1 and potential qualifying round opponent Akihiko Veno taking a tough clash against Jochem van der Linden in straight sets.
  • Finally, Vladimir Stakanov set up a brutal second round clash with Sam Lazzeri after a three-set tussle with Chile's Pátricio Sanchez. Sanchez took Stakhanov to a third set tiebreaker in an impressive performance on his least favourite surface, but couldn't finish the job as Stakhanov advanced 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2). The American Lazzeri was tested by Leon Skinner, but won through 6-3, 7-5.

  • Seeded players out: Taavi Aleksejev; Jiří Gross; Mat Mitchell; Jeremy Natale; Samuel Thorpe; Nikola Todorovski.

R. DANIELS/M-W. Li

6 4, 7 6(4)

An interview with:

ROY DANIELS

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. It must have felt good to finally get a win after such a long layoff?
ROY DANIELS: You make it sound like it's been years. (laughs) No, it was great to get a win today and it was probably what I needed going into next week, you know? Like I think I moved and served better than I did against Brdar, so to come up with a win just makes it feel like there's a huge weight off my shoulders.

Q. You mention the loss to Brdar; how differently did you approach this game today?
ROY DANIELS: I don't think I approached the game differently, it was just different circumstances. Miroslav was my first match in a few months, and I wasn't feeling 100%. He's a good player, you know, and you can't be at 60 or 70 per cent or whatever when you play him.

Q. Do you think Li was the perfect player for you to get your form back against?
ROY DANIELS: Maybe. I don't know. I think he's a better guy to play than someone like Brdar, but then again he's played a lot of tennis over the years and is a good player. It certainly tells me something about where I am now.

Q. Do you think your serving was the difference today?
ROY DANIELS: Probably, yeah. When you don't get broken in the match you are always going to be in a good position to win. But I think I returned well against a guy who is a smart server, so maybe that was the difference.

Q. Thoughts on playing Morgan Carter next? He's taken on a few CWLanders this year.
ROY DANIELS: It's definately going to be a tough match. I played a bit against Morgan back in the States and I know what he's capable of. He beat Jojo Mustard at Indianapolis, and then lost to Oxenstierna at Montréal. It's going to be a tough one. He's one of those players who you don't quite know what to expect from, so I've just got to build on what I started today and play my best tennis.

Q. Why no doubles this week?
ROY DANIELS: I just want to concentrate on my singles career at the moment. Last week was good because it gave me some practice that I wouldn't have got otherwise. But I'm first-and-foremost a singles player, and I don't think I need to play too much tennis before next week.

Yeah ill line up with Smeltz in the doubles if i aint already paired with anyone... Hopefully i can get through to the main draw in the Singles, would be a MASSIVE achievement...
