The quarterfinals of the French Open will see two United States-CWLand showdowns as each country produced two quarterfinalists on an action-packed eighth day of men's singles action. Continuing his awesome run of form,
Jojo Mustard produced perhaps his best performance yet with a four-set victory over 21st seed
Becker Haas. The German number one came into the match on the back of a straight sets thrashing of twelfth seed
Tiago Matias, and started brightly to hold service easily. But the underdog Mustard came out of the blocks with a bang as he managed to break Haas' service twice to take the first set 6-3. But the early excitement soon dissipated as Haas came flying back into the match with some well executed winners which proved too good for the nervous CWLander. Mustard, who shelved his grass court assault for a week, seemed to struggle to break free against the ever-consistent Haas as the 21st seed managed to level the match at a set all. But as has been the case all tournament, Mustard could not be counted out - the world number 42 taking the third in a tiebreaker before taking full advantage of an early break of service in the fourth to seal a momentous
6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory.
Despite the fact he's beaten two players of a higher ranking, Mustard's toughest test so far will likely come in the quarterfinals as
Dwayne Murdoch awaits. The 28th seeded American came into the match against surprise Norwegian sensation
Kim Vollan, somewhat unfairly, as underdog. But the Australian Open quarterfinalist held his nerve against the explosive Norwegian as he decimated the world number 67 in three brief sets -
6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Murdoch is perhaps the play that Mustard doesn't want to face; he's well-versed on all surfaces and is the epitome of a consistent performer; the CWLander would have no doubt fancied his chances more against the unpredictable Vollan in such a high profile contest.
But undoubtedly the most hotly anticipated contest of the quarterfinals will be the showdown between world number one Jason Hall and world number eight
Sven Oxenstierna after the pair took convincing fourth round wins. Oxenstierna managed to edge past rival
Illya Altman in four sets in an entertaining encounter which lasted over three hours. With both men coming off gruelling five-set wins in the third round, it was Oxenstierna who came out looking in tip-top shape as his Ukrainian opponent looked a little stiff. Whilst the ninth seed managed to break back from 3-4 down, he went on to drop the first set on the back of a pair of double faults. It was a similar story in the second set, though this time Altman got the early break of service against the fragile weapon of The Ox. But the eighth seed immediately forced his way back into the match by keeping the set on service, before again breaking the Altman serve to take a massive two set lead. But he would be forgiven for being somewhat worried as Altman looked to go one step further than what
Jean-Alain Depuis could in the third round - taking the third set quite comfortably. But Oxenstierna would ensure that the ninth seed would go one step shorter of the French veteran; a confident fourth set performance sealing a
75, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 passage to the quarterfinals.
After an indifferent week in Düsseldorf at the World Team Cup, top seed
Jason Hall seems to have put some worrying form behind him after he put in a clinic against thirteenth seed
Henry Charles. Charles had looked in fairly impressive form in his earlier matches, and after dropping just one set for the tournament he came into the clash with confidence. But in arguably his best performance on clay this season, Hall left the Brit stunned as he ran through the first set in just over twenty minutes to bagel the world number fifteen. It was more of the same in the second as Hall this time put a breadstick on Charles; his attacking play sounding out a warning to the other eight quarterfinalists (namely the world number two). Whilst Charles put on a better showing in the third to avoid complete humiliation, the result was never in doubt as Hall produced a
6-0, 6-1, 6-4 masterpiece to advance to the quarterfinals. Hall's recent form sees him look like a completely different player than the one who lost to The Ox in Düsseldorf; tournament organisers will no doubt be licking their lips at the prospect of a final for the world number one ranking between Hall and
Daniel Páez Blanco.
- Seeded players out: Illya Altman; Henry Charles; Becker Haas.

Unseeded CWLand pairing
Jefferson Drake and
Martti Korpinen will face off with red-hot Belgian duo
Yves Parmentier and
Mark Harmel in what is set to be a very exciting quarterfinal clash in the men's doubles. Drake and Korpinen took little over an hour and a half to defeat
Nilikar Midid and
Brett Read in straight sets; the Croatia-CWLand connection falling apart after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. Drake and Korpinen ran out to an early 3-0 lead as they piled the pressure on their opponents, but Read and Midid managed to snare a late break of service to ensure the match would go deep into the first. But a handy couple of serves from Jefferson Drake gave the CWLand duo some much-needed breathing room as they edged towards a one-set to love lead. The second set, however, was much less difficult for Drake and Korpinen as they met very little resistance; cruising to a
7-6(3), 6-2 win thanks mainly to some great teamwork both at the net and around the court. Parmentier and Harmel will be their toughest prospect yet; the Belgians have not lost a set all tournament and yesterday accounted for
Jean-Alain Depuis and
Pierre L'Estrange to back up their dominant win over the second seeds.
In the upset of the day,
Hugh James and
Ralph Robinson produced some superb tennis to upstage title contenders
János and
Zoltan Varga in three sets. The American pair dropped the first set quite convincingly, before they began to pick up the pace early in the second on the back of a first up break of service. The Hungarian brothers seemed to struggle to put away easy shots, and the American pair pounced as they set up an appetising quarterfinal with
Andrej Konc and
Evgeniy Maximov with a
3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.
The final quarterfinal was also booked, and it is probably the most eagerly anticipated of the lot as first seeds meet eighth seeds. Top seeds
Ion Andueza and
Sanchez Emelio were taken to three sets for the third time this tournament; but they managed to pull off a come-from-behind victory to defeat hard-working Russian duo
Sergey Malachenko and
Alexey Yarkin. Meanwhile, Moroccan brothers
Ross and
Hayden Onwye continued to steamroll their opposition as they produced their best performance of the tournament; a
6-1, 6-4 demolition job of local hopes and ninth seeds
Mikel Fosdike and
Christian Mary.
- Seeded players out: Mikel Fosdike / Christian Mary; Sergey Malachenko / Alexey Yarkin; János Varga / Zoltan Varga.
