CWLand qualifier Jefferson Drake impressed all by making it through to the round of 16 on the opening day at Doha in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. Drake came up against Chilean namesake Jefferson Quezada and managed to come back from a set down for a terrific start to Season I. Quezada and the impressive Drake were rock solid on serve in the opening set and it was only fitting that it would go to a tiebreaker. Despite sticking close to his Chilean opponent, Drake double-faulted on set point to hand Quezada an important set. But the loss of the opening set seemed to only drive Drake who broke Quezada in the opening game of the second set. The break dented the 23-year old's confidence as he won just five more games for the match as Drake sealed a hardfought 6(6)-7 6-1 6-4 victory. Drake now faces a tougher challenge in the form of world number four Daniel Pãez Blanco.
The other CWLand player in the main draw was Mat Mitchell who fought valiantly but was ultimately upstaged by fifth seeded Ukranian Illya Altman. Despite being 34 years of age, Altman managed to stay ahead of the 22-year old youngster and blew him away in the opening set. But the younger legs threatened to cost Altman big time as Mitchell stormed back into the contest thanks to a tight second set tie breaker where Mitchell made Altman work for every point. But Altman was awake to Mitchell's tactics in the third and had little trouble in coasting through the third to seal a 6-2 6(3)-7 6-3 victory to send the CWer crashing out of the competition.
No seeded players fell in the opening round, though Chinese wonderkid Zhijun Sun was troubled by local qualifier Yousif Hassan as he dropped the first set. The Qatari had the crowd on side as he claimed the first set 7-5, before Zhijun found his touch and finished off the match despite spirited resistance 5-7 6-4 6-4. Elsewhere, Spanish lucky loser Ion Andueza produced the upset of the round to knock out world number 39 Gunther Heug in three sets - 2-6 7-6 6-3.

The only CWLand player in the main draw of the Chennai Open had a successful opening to his campaign as wildcard Rob Bowenburg took an impressive victory over fiery 21-year old youngster Andrej Konc. "The Lob" looked little match for his Slovakian opponent in the opening set as he was blown away in just twenty eight minutes, before he produced a stunning reversal of fortune to concede just three games in the following sets. "The Lob" targetted the weak backhand of Konc and used his serve-volley game to great effect to wipe the floor with the youngster - Konc eventually losing his temper and crushing one of his racquets on the Chennai court. In just over an hour-and-a-half, Bowenburg had run away a 2-6 6-1 6-2 winner. Bowenburg now faces seventh seeded Cypriot Takis Georgilas in the second round.
Whilst it was generally a good day for the seeds in Chennai, Macedonian Branko Arsov was disappointing in his straight sets loss to 21-year old Norwegian Haiku Morkel. Arsov stayed with Morkel to take the first set to a breaker, but his loss here cost him confidence as he put his shots back in his bag and was a mere passenger as Morkel ran out a 7-6(2) 6-3 victor. The local crowd had a lot to cheer about as wildcard Ashim Kumar breezed through his opening match against Britain's Oscar Highsmith. After falling in straight sets to Tom Velten in qualifying, Kumar set up a second round showdown with top seed Rick Henson with an awesome 6-2 6-0 win.

Jamee Hancianu completed a successful day for the citizens of CWLand with an upset victory over local favourite David Jones. Hancianu, who earned a wildcard following impressive showings in qualifying, never looked troubled by his 29-year old opponent as he took advantage of Jones' lack of real strengths to dictate the pace of the game. Despite pidgeon-holing himself as a clay court grinder, Hancianu showed he had the ability to force an issue as he took the initiative against Jones and more than doubled the winners scored by his older opponent. With a thunderous forehand off a second serve from Jones, Hancianu sealed an emphatic 6-4 6-2 win to book a second round showdown with another Australian - third seeded David Champion.
After also receiving a wildcard, Heath James will be disappointed with his match against Turkish qualifier Aksu Emrem. Davis would have hoped that his big serve could cause the Turkish workhorse troubles, but he was sorely mistaken if he believed his serve could do the job as Aksu had little trouble in returning most of his predictable service games. Despite a disappointing 3-6 3-6 loss, Davis produced a few moments of excitement for the modest crowd which included an exceptional diving volley at the net which earned him a service game and also a stint with the physio following his less than graceful crash into the turf.
Twin brother of world number two Rick Henson, Eric Henson would have high hopes about the start of his season but was given a difficult opening round match against Bulgarian Denis Isaev. In a hardfought match, the fifth seeded American would be aggrieved that he lost two tiebreakers to the 27-year old Isaev which ultimately proved to be his downfall over the course of three sets - the Bulgarian taking the match 7-6 4-6 7-6. In an all-Austrian showdown, it was the lesser known Zbiginiew Boniek who upset world number 22 Heinz Hainisch over the course of three sets. Boniek took the first set off the fourth seed by breaking in the penultimate game, before losing the plot completely in the second as his higher ranked compatriot threatened to run away with the match. But in a turnaround, Boniek raced through the decider to defeat the man two years his junior 7-5 2-6 6-1.

Fresh off a heartening victory over Jefferson Quezada, Drake looked out of his depth early and was smashed in the first set - failing to win a game. After taking some time between sets to try and calm himself, Drake came out with some fire in his belly in the second set to hold serve and then somehow break the serve of Blanco to go ahead 2-0. But showing the class that got him to number four in the world, Blanco rallied to claim the last six games and dispatch Drake 6-0 6-2 in just 54 minutes. Blanco's win sets up a quarter-final clash with sixth-seeded Spaniard Sergio Joaquin who came from a set down to defeat lucky loser Ion Andueza 6(5)-7 6-1 6-1.
In an unlikely result, the quarter finals will be contested between seven of the eight seeded players as they exhibited form worthy of receiving a seeding. The only seed to fall was eighth seed Croat Miroslav Brdar who was defeated in straight sets by veteran Russian Vladimir Gryzlov. At age 37, Gryzlov still possesses fitness greater than many of his younger opponents (he was an athlete in the former USSR) and made light work of Brdar to set up a quarter-final showdown with fellow Russian Dmitry Orlov with a 7-5 6-4 victory.

Despite taking the first set to a tiebreaker, Bowenburg didn't quite look on the same page as his more experienced opponent and many in attendance would have felt Georgilas could finish the match quickly if he found some form. With the scores locked at 2-2 in the breaker, Georgilas found that form as he won the next five points to take the set and put Bowenburg firmly on the back foot. The Cypriot was a different player in the second set at "The Lob" was caught by surprise by Georgilas' quite brilliant array of shots. He had no answer as Georgilas began to build up a rhythm and finished the match quickly - 7-6(2) 6-0. Georgilas now meets fourth seed Juan Moreno in the quarter-finals.
It seems difficult to see top seed Rick Henson missing out on the final after his path was cleared of any seeds with countryman Dwayne Murdoch and Holland's Maarten Berg falling victim to surprise defeats. After Henson made light work of wildcard Ashim Kumar, Murdoch was trounced by qualifier Henry Charles as the Brit took the initiative to work Murdoch off the court. It wasn't a great day for the American as he received a code violation for breaking his racquet before bowing out soundlessly 6-2 6-1. Berg awaited a similar fate at the hands of China's Wang Li as he suffered a disappointing loss. Berg fought hard to take the first set by breaking serve in the final game, but service games remained steady for the remainer of the match as each were broken just once (both in the second set) to send the final two sets to tiebreakers. Whilst Wang easily won the first breaker, he was made the work in the decider and eventually prevailed - setting up a quarter-final clash with Haiku Morkel following a 5-7 7-6(4) 7-6(9) victory.

Hancianu would be forgiven for feeling a bit sheepish following the first set as he swaggered onto the court only to be destroyed by Champion's power hitting. Hancianu seemed to have abandoned the tactics which had won him his first round match against David Jones as he resorted to attempt a serve-and-volley game only to be caught woefully short. A self-confessed "clay courter", Hancianu adopted the grinding style that had made his Brisbane International a success to stay much closer with Champion in the second set and force it to a tiebreaker. But Champion edged past his younger opponent in the breaker to claim the match 6-1 7-6(6) and set up a quarter-final showdown with Bahamas qualifier Morton Blundell.

This is looking absurdly good right now, as Smith said, has potential to be massive. Hope all the participants will give the support to SBI and help out where need be to see this reach the levels it can. Have a feeling it may need more than a single thread though.

The big shock of Doha finally came as the semifinals were decided with top seed Daniel Pãez Blanco not a part of the action. Spain's Sergio Joaquin was a tough prospect for the Serbian and he was done in in straight sets by the sixth seed in a close encounter. The first set seemed to be going as planned for Blanco as he broke service early to take a 3-1 lead, before conceeding his own service game to see the match back on level pegging. The missed chance would cost Blanco as Joaquin took the first set easily in a tiebreaker despite being on the back foot for most of the opening set. The second set looked to continue much like the first as it was locked at 4-4. But again Blanco was broken at the least advantageous time to allow Joaquin to book a spot in the semi finals against Denis Orlov with a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory. On the other side of the draw, Croatia's Nilikar Midid won an eventful contest against Hungarian fourth seed Janos Varga. The two sets were hotly contested as the two put on a fantastic exhibition for the Qatarri fans, but Midid was able to hold his nerve in the first set tiebreaker and then break serve early in the second set to seal a hard-fought 7-6 7-5 win. Midid will now face the new tournament favourite in the form of Zhijun Sun who proved too stroke for Ukraine' Illya Altman.

The path seems to be clear in Chennai for the much awaited clash between the top two seeds as Rick Henson and Rasmus Olesen both advanced to the semifinals of the Chennai Open. Qualifier Henry Charles had defeated sixth seed Dwayne Murdoch in the round of sixteen but looked little match for the world number two Henson as he held serve just once in the opening set. The second set was much closer as the American favourite had more trouble in containing Charles' speed around the court. But the class of Henson shone through eventually as he claimed a surprisingly difficult second set to seal the match 6-1 7-5. Second seed Carlos Amato proved to be the only real shock exit of the quarter-finals as he was defeated in three sets by world number 34 Becker Haas. Haas took the opening set in a tiebreaker against the fiery Italian and looked the goods in the second set by racing to a 3-0 lead. But the match turned on its head as Amato powered back into the contest on the back of four consecutive games to take the second set 6-4. But the match continued its topsy-turvy nature as Haas dug deep to find some real form and eventually prevailed over his fancied opponent in a dominant third set display - taking the match 7-6(6) 4-6 6-1. Haas will face local favourite David Champion in the semi finals after he came back from a set down against Bahamas qualifier Morton Blundell. Few in attendance could believe that Blundell could take a set off the last remaining Australia in the main draw, but the 25-year old showed real determination to take it in a breaker. But Champion finally hit form and dispatched Blundell from there in just 48 minutes, taking the match in an hour-and-a-half 6(4)-7 6-0 6-2. On the other side of the draw, top seed Radivoj Daneu will face unseeded Colombian Diego Hurtado in the semifinal following the Colombian's straight sets win over seventh seed Domingo Gutiérrez Gomez from Puerto Rico. Daneu won a tougher match against Bulgarian Denis Isaev who had already knocked off fifth seed Eric Henson. After losing the first set, Daneu rallied to edge past the Bulgarian and book a semifinal spot with a 4-6 7-5 6-2 victory.

The big shock of Doha finally came as the semifinals were decided with top seed Daniel Pãez Blanco not a part of the action. Spain's Sergio Joaquin was a tough prospect for the Serbian and he was done in in straight sets by the sixth seed in a close encounter. The first set seemed to be going as planned for Blanco as he broke service early to take a 3-1 lead, before conceeding his own service game to see the match back on level pegging. The missed chance would cost Blanco as Joaquin took the first set easily in a tiebreaker despite being on the back foot for most of the opening set. The second set looked to continue much like the first as it was locked at 4-4. But again Blanco was broken at the least advantageous time to allow Joaquin to book a spot in the semi finals against Denis Orlov with a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory. On the other side of the draw, Croatia's Nilikar Midid won an eventful contest against Hungarian fourth seed Janos Varga. The two sets were hotly contested as the two put on a fantastic exhibition for the Qatarri fans, but Midid was able to hold his nerve in the first set tiebreaker and then break serve early in the second set to seal a hard-fought 7-6 7-5 win. Midid will now face the new tournament favourite in the form of Zhijun Sun who proved too stroke for Ukraine' Illya Altman.

The path seems to be clear in Chennai for the much awaited clash between the top two seeds as Rick Henson and Rasmus Olesen both advanced to the semifinals of the Chennai Open.
