Sven Oxenstierna continues to look the goods to claim his first tour title as he charged past Russian Dmitry Orlov in straight sets to back up his 6-0 6-0 win over Emelio Cobos in the round of 16. The Ox has looked irresistible and is almost certain to feature in the CWLand Davis Cup side for next week's opening tie. Dropping just three games to Orlov (6-2 6-1), Oxenstierna left his eighth seeded opponent powerless to resist a dominant display. He will not, however, face off against compatriot Randy Smeltz as the CWLander fell in straight sets to third seed Tiago Matias. The fiery Portuguese veteran remains the biggest chance against Oxenstierna after a 6-3 6-4 win.

Seeds out: 7-János Varga (HUN); 8-Dmitry Orlov (RUS).

In the match of the day in Dubai, Australian David Champion advanced to the semifinals with a superb three set win over second seeded Czech Radek Špidla. In the battle of the big serves, Champion came from a set down to defeat the Australian Open finalist in a textbook display of power tennis. His 2-6 6-4 6-3 win followed a hard-fought win for top seed Jason Hall who took over two-and-a-half hours to overcome Radivoj Daneu. The fifth seed Serb made the world number one world hard, but ultimately fell just short in a 6-4 6(4)-7 7-5 loss.

Seeds out: 2-Radek Špidla (CZE); 3-Rick Henson (USA); 5-Radivoj Daneu (SRB).

Jefferson Drake's march to the Delray Beach semifinals continued with a third straight sets victory - this time against Austrian Zbiginiew Boniek. The gutsy Austrian proved no match for the enigmatic CWLander who, like Oxenstierna, will be placing his case forward for a spot in the Davis Cup squad next week. After struggling through the first set 7-5, Drake looked much more composed in the second and, despite a close scoreline, never looked troubled after an early break. His 7-5 6-4 win sets up a semifinal clash with second seed Li Wang of China who continued his unassuming ways with a solid win over local wildcard Jimmy Holland. Earlier, Jason Bradley became the only American to advance to the final four with an upset win against top seed Carlo Amato.

Seeds out: 1-Carlo Amato (ITA).

It was devastation again for CWLander Sven Oxenstierna as he fell at the penultimate hurdle to be bundled out in three sets in the Acapulco semifinals. Facing a tough prospect in the form of Tiago Matias of Portugal, some may have criticised The Ox for coming into the match with too much confidence following his easy run in the tournament so far. That looked to continue as the world number eleven broke early in the first set and maintained his lead throughout the set. Ahead by one set to love, Oxenstierna looked to step it up a notch; but the wily third seed seemed to have his measure as he forced the second to a tiebreaker. It was there that the Portuguese veteran began to find his rhythm and, after a dominant display, had all the momentum heading into the last. It seemed at one stage that neither man wished to take the match as serves faltered early in the set. But it was Matias who advanced to a finals showdown with second seed Davis Kennedy - prevailing 4-6 7-6(1) 6-4.

Seeds out: 1-Sven Oxenstierna (CWL).

World number one Jason Hall will have a fight on his hands as he faces off against the big-serving Australian David Champion in the Dubai final. Hall had little trouble in disposing of the volatile Serb Danijel Micic - Hall romping home in straight sets after a tough quarterfinal matchup against another Serb; Radivoj Daneu. On the other half of the draw, Champion defeated Argentine seventh seed Juan Moreno in a three setter. After being smashed 6-1 in the first, Champion found his touch and his very best serves to never really look troubled again on the hard courts - advancing to the final 1-6 6-4 6-3.

CWLand's Jefferson Drake has become the second of his countrymen to make it to a tournament final in the Open Era with a crushing win over Chinese second seed Li Wang in Delray Beach. Drake needed a little over an hour to dispose of the steady Chinese national - breaking early in both sets to take complete control. It was an impressive win for the enigmatic Drake who at times has been criticised for his wily play and inconsistency. His powerful forehand brought the second seed unstuck at crucial times and will play a key part in his final matchup after a dominant 6-4 6-3 win. His opponent will be seventh seed Jason Bradley who, in front of a home crowd, looked in ominous touch against Portugal's Valter Cordiero. Cordiero managed to take just two games off the American and capitulated 6-2 6-0.

Seeds out: 2-Li Wang (CHN).

Second seeded Canadian Davis Kennedy has claimed his first career title with a straight sets victory over Portugal's Tiago Matias. Kennedy, whose form has been lukewarm at best, looked by far the better player from the outset as he ran through his third seeded opponent in the second after a tight opening set. Matias kept up with Kennedy and, with the scores level at 5-5, had both his service and confidence broken after being up 40-0. His disappointment carried on to the second set where he quickly fell behind 5-0 - a brief fight back not enough to save him from a 7-5 6-3 loss.

World number one Jason Hall has again proven that he is the best in the world after dispatching Australian David Champion in the final of The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. Champion, who in the quarter finals upstaged second seed Radek Špidla, came into the contest with endless confidence and looked good in his first service game with two aces. But whilst he continued to serve up aces to the top seed, he failed to do anything else and fell apart at times to hand Hall the first set. Hall's form hasn't been at its greatest, but it didn't matter for him in this final as he claimed yet another championship - sealing the match 6-3 6-2.

Seeds out: 6-David Champion (AUS).

Drake overcomes jitters to claim Delray Beach
Final - Delray Beach International Tennis Championships - Delray Beach

Despite losing the opening set, Jefferson Drake of CWLand has come from the brink to claim his first career title in the final of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships against unseeded local Jason Bradley. Coming into the match as favourite against the world number 70, Drake looked comfortable if not reserved in the opening set as the normally enigmatic player failed to capitalise on opportunities presented to him by the American. But he soon found his form to claim his maiden career title ahead of the all important Davis Cup tie next week.

The first set was a tight one which surprised many as Bradley again looked to assert himself against higher ranked opposition. He managed to break the shaky service of Drake in the fifth game to surge ahead 3-2 - but lost his advantage immediately as a double fault levelled the first set at three games apiece. With the match back on service, the first set headed to a tiebreaker and it was Drake who fired the first shot as a thunderbolt down the 'T' gave him a 1-0 lead. But Drake continued to struggle to overcome his jitters as he meekly returned an overhead smash to Bradley - the Texan duly delivering a thunderbolt of his own down the line to steal a 5-3 lead. With a couple of powerful serves, Bradley claimed the tiebreaker 7-4 to take a handy lead.

But from there, Drake looked the better player as he broke service early in the second with a much more determined attitude. The Belarus-born youngster seemed to regain some of the vigour that helped him to the final and, after surging ahead 4-1 looked to have the set in the bag. But the third seed gave up another break and looked like he could fall apart, before calming himself in a time break and claiming the second set 6-4. The decider was much closer as neither man gave an inch on their own service for the first ten games on the set. Tied at 5-5, Drake survived a scare as he saved a break point and edged ahead 6-5 before producing two moments of brilliance to have Bradley struggling at 15-40. After two sensational backhand winners, it was little surprise that the CWLand national took his first championship point to seal another big victory in the short history of CWLand and to claim the Delray Beach title 6(4)-7 6-4 7-5.

Seeds out: None.

Dubai proves to be happy-hunting ground for world number one
Hall extends giant lead on ATP Rankings

American Jason Hall has extended his already massive lead on newly released ATP Rankings to a whopping 715 points ahead of world number two Radek Špidla. Hall, who defeated Australian David Champion to win a tournament in Dubai, also took his career earnings past US$1.5M to US$1,759,800. Also entering the top three in third is fellow American Rick Henson who bumped youngster Darcy Cowan to fourth following his quarterfinal exit in the Dubai tournament. Elsewhere, Davis Kennedy bumped Illya Altman out of the top ten as he jumped seven spots following an impressive victory over Tiago Matias in the Acapulco final. The biggest jump in places from a top 100 player was by Argentina's Paolo Mandonna whose quarterfinal appearance at Acapulco shot him up 60 spots to number 79 in the world. The biggest fall for a top 100 player was Israel's Tal Cohen who fell from number 85 to number 100.

Top Fifty

From CWLand, Jefferson Drake's victory in Delray Beach saw him climb to 14th in the ATP World Tour rankings; up fourteen spots from the previous week. Also making huge strides was Randy Smeltz who finds himself close to breaking into the top fifty after skyrocketting up 27 places to number 53. The biggest fall was by former world number 131 Jean-Paul Valley who fell 13 spots to number 144. Top ranked player Sven Oxenstierna's shock exit in the Acapulco semifinals didn't cost him as he remained at number 12, but had he gone on to play in the final his ranking would have climbed to number 11 at the very least.
