Jamee Hancianu will be the first ever CWLand citizen to represent the newly formed nation in an Open Era final as he booked his place in the Brasil Open final following an impressive three-set victory over Paraguay's
Marcelo Alavos. The seventh seeded Paraguayan got off to the worst possible start in the first game of the first set as he was broken by the energetic youngster who looked more than up to the task of matching it with the world number fifty. The 19-year old would press the advantage further in the first set as he raced to a 4-0 lead and was eventually able to clinch the all-important opening set 6-3. The second set was much tougher for the Romanian-born youngster as Alavos showed that he would definitely not be giving up without a fight. He broke service in the fifth game of the set and then held his own steady serve to take a 4-2 lead - a break which was enough to help him hold off an excited Hancianu. But the dream would come true for young Hancianu in the third-and-deciding set as he broke Alavos' faltering service twice and held his own every time to seal a dramatic
6-3 4-6 6-2 upset.
Hancianu's opponent in the final will be his biggest test so far as top seed
Illya Altman of Ukraine took a straight sets win over fifth seed
Juan Moreno. The Ukrainian has been in good touch this tournament and will head into the final as raging favourite following an emphatic victory in the first semifinal. But Hancianu has already shown he can match it with those in the top ten as he sprung an upset over world number ten
Sven Oxenstierna in his quarterfinal matchup.
Seeds out: 5-Juan Moreno (COL); 7-Marcelo Alavos (PAR).

The unexpected flaky form of world number one
Jason Hall continued in his semifinal clash in Rotterdam as he advanced to the final by the skin of his teeth against world number six
Radivoj Daneu. An overwhelming favourite despite his less than impressive win in the quarterfinals, Hall was pressed again by the impressive Serb as the first set went to a tiebreaker. Hall managed to capitalise on a number of poor errors from the fourth seed to claim the first set, but was in no way assured of going on to victory as he struggled early in the second set. Daneu broke the service of Hall twice and it was once too many times as Hall managed to stage a late fightback only to drop the set 3-6. In the third, Hall did managed to issue an ominous warning to whoever his opponent in the final would be with an emphatic display to seal a fairly solid - but certainly not comfortable -
7-6(4) 3-6 6-2 victory.
His opponent will be the man many describe as the second best player in the world - certainly one who belies his world ranking of eight. 28-year old
Rick Henson also prevailed in three sets against big-serving Australian
David Champion to give himself a chance at stopping the Hall juggernaut. Despite a blip on the radar in the second set, Henson was comfortably the better player against the enigmatic Australian and will come into the final as slight underdog against the world number one.
Seeds out: 4-Radivoj Daneu (SRB); 6-David Champion (AUS).

Finals
The final of the SAP Open will be contested between an American and a Brazilian after two entertaining semifinal matches in San Jose. In the first semi, fifth seed
Wayne Boyd pulled off an impressive upset to defeat teenage prodigy
Darcy Cowan in a marathon three-set contest. Cowan took the first set comfortably before allowing the fighting Boyd an avenue back into the contest as he took the second set to a tiebreaker. Cowan will feel agrieved that he didn't capitalise on his chances in the second and third sets as he was beaten in two tiebreakers in a match which raged over the course of two hours. Ultimately, Boyd prevailed thanks to a Cowan unforced error to seal an impressive
2-6 7-6(5) 7-6(3) victory. In the second semi, Brazil's
Roberto Santos set up a finals matchup with Boyd as he took an impressive straight sets win over Norway's
Kim Vollan. Vollan, the brother of world number 24
Tom Vollan, failed to capture his earlier form in the opening set as Santos managed to return everything thrown at him and capitalised on Vollan's litany of errors. Santos was, however, very impressive in the second set as Vollan lifted his game and was serving like a man possessed - the hard-working Santos prevailing in a tiebreaker to seal a comfortable
6-2 7-6(6) victory.
Seeds out: 1-Darcy Cowan (USA).
