Jamee Hancianu will be the first ever CWLand citizen to represent the newly formed nation in an Open Era final as he booked his place in the Brasil Open final following an impressive three-set victory over Paraguay's Marcelo Alavos. The seventh seeded Paraguayan got off to the worst possible start in the first game of the first set as he was broken by the energetic youngster who looked more than up to the task of matching it with the world number fifty. The 19-year old would press the advantage further in the first set as he raced to a 4-0 lead and was eventually able to clinch the all-important opening set 6-3. The second set was much tougher for the Romanian-born youngster as Alavos showed that he would definitely not be giving up without a fight. He broke service in the fifth game of the set and then held his own steady serve to take a 4-2 lead - a break which was enough to help him hold off an excited Hancianu. But the dream would come true for young Hancianu in the third-and-deciding set as he broke Alavos' faltering service twice and held his own every time to seal a dramatic 6-3 4-6 6-2 upset.

Hancianu's opponent in the final will be his biggest test so far as top seed Illya Altman of Ukraine took a straight sets win over fifth seed Juan Moreno. The Ukrainian has been in good touch this tournament and will head into the final as raging favourite following an emphatic victory in the first semifinal. But Hancianu has already shown he can match it with those in the top ten as he sprung an upset over world number ten Sven Oxenstierna in his quarterfinal matchup.

Seeds out: 5-Juan Moreno (COL); 7-Marcelo Alavos (PAR).

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
Quarterfinals - Rotterdam

Finals

The unexpected flaky form of world number one Jason Hall continued in his semifinal clash in Rotterdam as he advanced to the final by the skin of his teeth against world number six Radivoj Daneu. An overwhelming favourite despite his less than impressive win in the quarterfinals, Hall was pressed again by the impressive Serb as the first set went to a tiebreaker. Hall managed to capitalise on a number of poor errors from the fourth seed to claim the first set, but was in no way assured of going on to victory as he struggled early in the second set. Daneu broke the service of Hall twice and it was once too many times as Hall managed to stage a late fightback only to drop the set 3-6. In the third, Hall did managed to issue an ominous warning to whoever his opponent in the final would be with an emphatic display to seal a fairly solid - but certainly not comfortable - 7-6(4) 3-6 6-2 victory.

His opponent will be the man many describe as the second best player in the world - certainly one who belies his world ranking of eight. 28-year old Rick Henson also prevailed in three sets against big-serving Australian David Champion to give himself a chance at stopping the Hall juggernaut. Despite a blip on the radar in the second set, Henson was comfortably the better player against the enigmatic Australian and will come into the final as slight underdog against the world number one.

Seeds out: 4-Radivoj Daneu (SRB); 6-David Champion (AUS).

SAP Open
Quarterfinals - San Jose

Finals

The final of the SAP Open will be contested between an American and a Brazilian after two entertaining semifinal matches in San Jose. In the first semi, fifth seed Wayne Boyd pulled off an impressive upset to defeat teenage prodigy Darcy Cowan in a marathon three-set contest. Cowan took the first set comfortably before allowing the fighting Boyd an avenue back into the contest as he took the second set to a tiebreaker. Cowan will feel agrieved that he didn't capitalise on his chances in the second and third sets as he was beaten in two tiebreakers in a match which raged over the course of two hours. Ultimately, Boyd prevailed thanks to a Cowan unforced error to seal an impressive 2-6 7-6(5) 7-6(3) victory. In the second semi, Brazil's Roberto Santos set up a finals matchup with Boyd as he took an impressive straight sets win over Norway's Kim Vollan. Vollan, the brother of world number 24 Tom Vollan, failed to capture his earlier form in the opening set as Santos managed to return everything thrown at him and capitalised on Vollan's litany of errors. Santos was, however, very impressive in the second set as Vollan lifted his game and was serving like a man possessed - the hard-working Santos prevailing in a tiebreaker to seal a comfortable 6-2 7-6(6) victory.

Seeds out: 1-Darcy Cowan (USA).

It was disappointment for CWLand youngster Jamee Hancianu as he walked out of his first ever professional final with a crushing loss as top seed Illya Altman raced to victory in the Brasil Open. The world number nine came out firing as he did not concede a point in his opening service game - an ominous sight for Hancianu who struggled to get the ball back over the net. Hancianu quickly fell a break behind as Altman surged ahead 3-0, but the CWLander looked as if he had calmed his nerves as he finally held serve. But it wasn't the case, as Altman continued his charge as he claimed the first set 6-1. The second set was no more difficult for Altman than the first as he found himself leading 3-1. With championship point up, Altman fired down an ace to seal the Brasil Open and the US$77,300 cheque. Hancianu, however, will be happy with his performance throughout the tournament as he surged up the world rankings by 34 places to edge inside the top thirty.

Seeds out: None.

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
Final - Rotterdam

Finals

World number one Jason Hall has been handed his first professional defeat in the final of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament as long-time rival Rick Henson reigned supreme in Rotterdam. Hall, who had been in scratchy form in the quarters and semis, found himself struggling early against his nemesis Henson who looked in comparatively brilliant touch. Despite Hall's poor form, he managed to break back in the opening set to level the match at 5-5, but soon found his own service broken as Henson claimed the opening set 7-5. Hall had the worst possible start to the second set as he was broken twice early, but managed to claw back to break Henson's service in the sixth game. It wasn't enough, though, as Henson hit a powerful smash past the best player in the world to secure an upset victory.

Seeds out: 1-Jason Hall (USA).

American veteran Wayne Boyd has sealed a dream victory in San Jose as he claimed the SAP Open in a come-from-behind victory against Roberto Santos of Brazil. The 33-year old Boyd, who defeated top seed Darcy Cowan in the semifinals, started off nervously as Santos took advantage of a couple of half-hearted shots from the local favourite to claim the first set 6-3. But Boyd soon found his feet and looked calm as his 32-year old opponent became the one to get the jitters. A couple of breaks of service allowed the local favourite to level the match at a set each. But Santos managed to find his form again in the third as the two experienced players went hell-for-leather in the deciding set to send it to a tiebreaker. But it was the American Boyd who used to support of the crowd to his advantage as he surged ahead to lift the trophy with a 3-6 6-2 7-6(2) victory.

Seeds out: None.

Bad luck for Jamee, but good for CWL when it comes to Davis Cup that we have a number of players doing really well. Have a feeling the US might be almost unbeatable though!

Is it me, or are there too many injuries that are taking too long to overcome. Seems to be 7-8 injuries per week which will take on average 4-5 weeks to get over. It just sounds like a few too many to me.

Looking forward to getting back out on court though.

Strap your ankles Davis, it does seem like a very common injury, it's why I sat out last week.

Bad luck Jamee.

Was pleased with Jo Jo's performance in the Brasil Open, especially given it was on clay. Hopefully he can build on that and crack the top 50.

Any one who has competed in the last two tournaments will take a mandatory break. Would strongly advise breaks for others with a jam-packed schedule ahead with Masters events galore and a lot of tournaments before Roland Garros. You don't want to get burned out.

Roy Daniels will not compete in any of these tournaments; he will instead prepare for The Dubai Tennis Champs.
